'Challenges' Prove Too Much For White House
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20041216/pl_nm/bush_economy_challenges_dc&e=1&ncid=
snip>
The word "challenges" -- a main theme of a two-day White House economic conference that ended on Thursday -- was misspelled on a large television monitor that stood in front of Bush during a panel discussion.

Perfect. Stupider by the day.

15. "Spelling Challanges for Today and Tomorrow"
Edited on Thu Dec-16-04 05:57 PM by htuttle
I'm amazed nobody caught this. Think of how many crew personnel worked on this. Think about all those economist types who looked at this. The Stage Manager didn't notice it?

Do you think that everyone was just TOO afraid to appear to criticize the king that they all just broke into a sweat and looked the other way when they noticed it? OH MY GOD! A MISTAKE!!! SHH!! DON'T SAY ANYTHING!!

That must be a very oppressive atmosphere to work in. You couldn't pay me enough to do that, not even a million bucks.

59. Maybe some people there DID notice it...
...and just decided not to say ANYTHING to ANYBODY -- just to be contrary and help make this "event" look even more absurd than it already was.

I know that personally, I'm REAL bad about doing that. I'll get asked something like "Is it okay to pour water on a grease fire to put it out?" and, first time through, I'll give them the straight answer. But then, if some fool says "No way! That's not right! I've been doing this for years -- what do YOU know about it?"... Well, that's when I'll just smile and shrug and let them do whatever they want. And slowly reach for the phone to dial 911.

The joke was that "Moron" was spelled "Moran" and it's been a joke on DU for awhile. There's a picture of the guy with his mis-spelled sign that's around here, and if you ask, some DU'er will post it. I don't have it...you'll have to take my word that what I say is what it is. ;-)'s

Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 12:02 AM by bunny planet
Can you let me in on it? I'm so glad I didn't correct the spelling everytime I saw it, I'm usually a spelling-nazi but I figured something was up when everybody wrote it the same way.

Not only did they not spell challenges correctly, the hoky typeface that looks circa 1977 letraset is also hysterical. Very funny, very pathetic. We are so f*cked.

Never mind I see the moran explanation upthread.

,...it wouldn't be a big deal.

But, they deliver nothing other than "bullydom".

They deserve the "trigger-happy", persecutory retributions that they have used against their own people.

They are NOT stupid,...they are usurpers,...calculating usurpers of human weakness in order to profit and empower their selfist/stingy lot.

They contribute nothing, take anything and will eventually get what they have given,...a big, black hole.

29. I've always hated bizspeak. When we were saner we had "problems".
Now we have "issues" or "challenges"...and when they're really on a bizspeak roll they'll call a problem an "opportunity".
The world could be falling down around them and they'd be chirping happily about challenges.

58. Look. It IS obnoxious but good psychology nonetheless
Fostering a good attitude is what business is all about, and you know what they say about "If you don't have anything good to say..."
I have had to learn this attitude and mindset myself over the years since I was always from the "reality based community".
It can be offputting as fantasy land spin, but the business community embraces this mindset.

As to the main post on the misspelling, I am cracking up!

65. Externally, I understand completely...
...but internal use of the happy words cracks me up.
Like when the ops director asks where we stand on "that press drive issue" and I answer "Well, there aren't any more flames shooting out of it, but we've lost power to the rest of the plant".
I suppose it makes sense to tell the customer there'll be a slight delay due to an electrical issue, but it takes a mind firmly in denial to call that an issue when you're talking to the electrician. :D

Since this administration seems to be language "challanged", why don't we just use hieroglyphics instead? For example, the hieroglyphic for his economic summit would be a picture of a dog, a picture of a pony, and a picture of Barnum and Bailey's Circus. English translation - A dog and pony show with a lot of clowns.

82. This just released on reuters...
Scott McLellan:

"We accept no responsibility for this banner. It was actually painted by the troops on the USS Lincoln before the president ever got there. It was their initiative, not ours. "

And on FOX:

"Well I think it shows the courage of the Bush Anministration to actually spell the word the way it should be spelled.... i mean, isn't that how it sounds? Chall an - ges? Kudos to them. "

83. Over 59 Mio. Americans didn't want a President who is smarter then them
Horrifyingly to us and the rest of the world, 59 Million people voted for an utterly ignorant and incompetent moron.

I guess birds of a feather flock together

84. Best laugh I've had all day!
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 11:25 PM by Merlot
And it's been a really long day so I needed a good laugh. For the first and probably last time, I can honestly say "thank you" to the Bush Administration for bringing some humor into my life.

I know they do a lot of stupid stuff, but usually it just scares me...

85. "Moran" has been making me crazy here for ages--
ironically, it's the name of a pretty liberal democratic congressman from the Eighth District in Virginia (i.e. just down the road from me): http://moran.house.gov/
