Colombia Troops Being Hired for Iraq Jobs

ANDREW SELSKY

Associated Press

BOGOTA, Colombia - Recruiters working for U.S. contractors are hiring former Colombian soldiers - and even luring some active-duty ones - for security jobs in Iraq, says a former army officer who met with the recruiters.

Although Colombia is a member of President Bush's "coalition of the willing" in Iraq, it hasn't sent troops because its army is battling a 40-year-old Marxist insurgency with U.S. aid at home. But some former soldiers have recently begun going as contractors - and earning up to $8,000 monthly.

The office of Colombia's military commander, Gen. Carlos Alberto Ospina, declined to comment Friday on the recruitment effort. But other officials have said there was no problem with Colombians being hired for security jobs.

"This is a recruitment by security firms that are looking for experts," Defense Minister Jorge Uribe told local radio. "They're looking for people who have experience in security"

ON EDIT: Looking for people WITH EXPERIENCE IN TORTURE.

THIS WILL WIN THEIR HEARTS AND MINDS ALRIGHT.

LOL

I'M GLAD GRANDMA CAN FORGO HER PRESCRIPTION DRUGS NEXT MONTH !!!!!!!

6. I wonder how many of these 'security firms' are employing ...
... "former military personnel" in the U.S. for $8K/mo? If these are "former military personnel," then how did they evade Rumsfeld's back-door draft? Indeed, how many "former military personnel" of the US are currently working for some profiteering 'security firm' in Iraq? Just why would Rumsfeld's press gangs ignore them? Is it possible there's some cronyism? Is it possible these 'security firms' have influence with the Bushoilini Regime that makes these people immune for call-up while some 50-year-old who's not serving corporatist profiteer doesn't get that immunity? The stench of corruption is awesome.

8. Who didn't understand??
what the pres. and others in the regime were traveling around for in the past several months?
Mexico was promised no hindrance of Nationals crossing the border so long as they will report to the nearest army recruiting office!
Other Central and S. American countries were given options of military personnel being allowed to work for American (halliburton for 1) contractors at incomes they never dreamed of!(not different than human smuggling every day}.
This regime believes that there will never be a reckoning for their crimes against the nation and humanity, and they live on the perpetuity of huge personal (financial) gain as quickly and as long as possible.
God seems to allow the richest first through the eye of the needle!

9. Let me ask you a critical question:
What do you think is going to happen to latin American public opinion of Bush when you-know-what is going to happen to those latin American soldiers or Halliburton workers? It won't take long before their countrymen figure out that Bush nor the USA is worth dying for.

Latin Americans are people who understand, and don't have much sympathy, for people who bring on their own problems. For example, when the WTC went down, they were shocked and shared our tragic loss, but when they discovered that those pilots were trained by OUR OWN American flight schools, their reaction was, "Well, what did you expect, stupid?" (That last part I added for emphasis.)

They have a very pragmatic outlook on life. They enjoy life to its fullest, no matter what level of society they find themselves in. But if the cost to advance outweighs the quality of life (and by quality, I don't mean materialistic things) they will forgo one for the other.

10. At $8K a month I doubt whatever they are doing is on the up and up.

That's the kind of money you pay someone to keep quiet about what they are really doing.

11. Mercenaries from foreign countries just could be some day
used against the people at home - at least much easier than setting US-citizens against US-citizens... my imagination is running amok these days.

12. How much is $8000 a month worth nowadays?
Given the decline of the dollar...

It is a lot of bux, though.

And consider we repay the iraqi's $100 for each destroyed business in Fallujah or something to that effect.
