Fetus stolen from slain mom believed found
Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 04:30 PM by Cooley Hurd
Baby appears healthy according to police. Anonymous tip led to baby's recovery

MSNBC link:

SKIDMORE, Mo. - Authorities said Friday that had found a healthy baby girl and believed it could be the child of slain Bobbi Jo Stinnett.

An eight-months-pregnant Stinnett, 23, was found dead Thursday afternoon and had apparently been strangled, said Sheriff Ben Espey.

“Someone was wanting a baby awful bad,” he said.

Espey would not say how the infant was cut from Stinnett’s body. He said there were no signs of forced entry into the home, but there was evidence of a struggle.

An Amber Alert was issued for the infant early Friday.

Edited on Fri Dec-17-04 09:38 PM by genieroze
Sounds white to me, I could be wrong but I'm not. But you are right that color doesn't matter, only the crime. I felt bad about this before I knew her name and seen her pic. She is a pretty brown haired girl.

77. the point is, that media pays hardly ANY attention to non-whites murdered
Let me spell this out to you, because you are clearly missing the whole point in your haste to attack everyone: the conservative news-networks are clearly racist in their reporting. They center in on beautiful young white women who are murdered, when they virtually ignore anyone else. Do you think Laci Peterson would have been such a media cause if she was a plain-Jane 45 year old brunette or any poor black woman? Do you think if Laci was a working class immigrant from Nigeria that she would be beatifed by the media? Huh?

You see, the racism is the media's. And that is what people are saying. That now that the Laci case is over, or essentially over, then they have to find the next young beautiful white woman to spend their time on, because they don't want to actually spend their time doing REAL investigative work on examining this fascist, war-mongering government of ours.

84. oh, yes
I was in Maryville yesterday afternoon and last evening - my nephew graduated from NW Missouri State last night - and the satellite trucks were all over the police station parking lot, about 3 blocks from my nephew's house. His Republican mother-in-law burst in and excitedly told us all that she'd just spotted the Fox News truck. No mention of the tragedy, but she frothed over Fox News several times. It was a very long day.

I think the media did indeed go crazy over this story, but it appears the person responsible was caught quickly so I doubt we'll be subjected to it 24/7 a la Peterson.

63. No, I think people think it happened to her BECAUSE she was white
which would make the baby more 'valuable'. And make the news story more marketable. It's disgusting that one baby would be more desirable than another and that some creep would do this to another human.

The people were caught and the baby was found ok. But the family-it's just sadder beyond words.

66. What makes this story valuable is the method by which the baby
was taken. The killer did a cesearean section on the woman! It would have gotten this much attention regardless of the color of Mom's skin IMO.

You are either a freeper or just a jerk. Nobody comes to a new place and immediately start attacking people, especially when clearly they don't know what they are talking about. You miss the whole point--this woman will be made a "cause celebre" because she is white, because the whoring conservative media is racist. Get it?

Skidmore is about 15-20 miles north of here, they've been breaking in with news, but are not saying much more than what has been said here. They believe they've found the baby, and sheriff Espey did say baby, not fetus. That the baby had been found in Kansas, but not much more than that little bit, I'm certain that we'll know who, and why by monday.

35. What is really sad is how this young mother's death will be exploited
The RW fundies will use it as an argument that there should not be abortion, because, after all, if we had lots of healthy white babies up for abortion instead of being aborted, then whoever killed the mother for the baby would not have been so desperate.

It would probably not enter their minds that anyone insane enough to kill a mother and cut out the fetus/baby is not a good candidate for adopting any baby.

This entire thing makes me feel ill. That woman's last thoughts were probably that she wasn't able to save her baby.

(In cases like this I can't get into arguing fetus vs. baby, I just can't.)

53. The fetus's survival was more important to these people than the mother's
They sound pretty much like Bush and his cronies with their late-term abortion ban that doesn't make exceptions for the health of the mother.

A horrible tragedy, but not a surprise. This is the way society is going.

62. Of course it was more important--they knew the Mom was dead
they HOPED the baby was alive. I agree that fetus was probably not the best way to phrase it, but having been a labor and delivery nurse for several years that was the medically correct terminology. When a baby is born as a premie and does not live docs and nurses technically refer to it as a fetus. I don't know why-that is just the way it is.
What I don't get and this is not directed to you but to many of the people who have responded tonight is WHY people would take this horrible tragedy and try to make it part of the Bush problem. I am not a Freeper--I am a strong Kerry supporter and I live for the day we uncover the election fraud and expose those Right Wing Egomaniacs for what they are, but really, everything that happens in the world is not tied to them. For all we know this lady could have been a fellow DU'er.

What they did was heroic. I'm referring the people that did this horrible thing, deciding that the life of the mother didn't matter to them as much as the child they wanted.

I understand your point, and I didn't mean to blame Bush for the murder of this woman. I was intending more to comment on some of the values that he espouses, particularly his disregard for the safety of women in late pregnancy. I don't necessarily think that the murderer(s) did what they did just because of anything Bush has said or done, but I think it's reasonable to criticize his beliefs when, taken to the extreme and followed to their conclusion, they result in tragedies that could be equated to this one. Bush and others with his ideology are pushing us toward a society that elevates the life of the fetus above the life of the mother.

And thank you for what you've done. My grandmother was a premie nurse, and that was the first thing I remember wanting to be when I grew up. My mom was also a respiratory therapist for several years.

Edited for grammar.

55. I can't imagine this is a stranger crime
I think a DNA analysis is certainly in order. I think for some reason, someone wanted that baby. Clearly, a very insane action, though.

57. Local update
I live in the area, and this story is all over the local news. Here is one of the KC TV sites with the most recent update of what we are hearing:

http://www.thekansascitychannel.com/news/4005075/detail.html

I noticed Fox is still going with the "fetus" headline last I looked. Figures. :eyes:

They are going to do DNA testing on the baby to confirm that it is the one that they are looking for. A terrible tragedy for the mother. I hope that this is the baby. The authorities feel pretty sure that it is.

I will post more updates if anything new is reported locally.

67. Not long ago a friend sent me an article about a similar incident...
a baby was cut out of its mother's body, but it happened in a South American country. My buddy (a Bush supporter who knows how upset I was about the election) made the comment, "This is why I'm glad I live in the good ol' USA and not some foreign country." As I told him when I sent him this article today...evil knows no boundaries.

This is a ghastly occurrence. I only hope the baby is okay (hear it's been found now) and the people who did this horrible thing are held accountable and spend the next oh, 50 or 60 years behind bars.

78. This has been happening a lot recently...
Quoted from the Article

"Several pregnant women have been killed in recent years by attackers who then removed their fetuses, in some cases to pass the children off as their own.

In the most recent case, a 21-year-old woman was shot to death in Oklahoma in December 2003, allegedly by another woman who pretended the 6-month-old fetus was her child. The fetus died and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. "

I've never heard of it before this. It's unimaginably sick. That poor woman and her family.

79. Remember when this was first reported. back in the mid-90s...
...and Newt Gingrich rushed out a press statement blaming it all on "the culture of liberalism"...?

80. Chances are
That the woman who did this has had a miscarriage or infertility problems on top of some level of mental illness or emotional disturbance. When someone's entire psychological structure revolves around becoming a parent, it's a not uncommon spot for a psychotic break, though usually it gets channeled into kidnapping rather than something this extreme.

83. Woman had lost a baby, AP reports
Just read a story online that said the suspect had lost a baby and had faked the rest of her pregnancy to her family.

Losing a baby is difficult (understatment of the year). It is not much of a stretch to say that in some women, it can possibly lead to a psychotic break.

How very, very tragic.
