Bush Chief Speechwriter Has Coronary Procedure

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush's chief speechwriter, Michael Gerson, underwent successful angioplasty to open two partly blocked coronary arteries on Friday after suffering chest pains, the White House said.
"Mike is resting comfortably and is in good spirits," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

Gerson was taken to a hospital on Friday morning for what McClellan said was "evaluation of symptoms consistent with atypical angina."

"He underwent successful angioplasty and received two coronary stents to reopen partially blocked vessels," McClellan said.

He said Bush spoke to him by phone and wished him a speedy recovery.
