GOP Senators Spring to Defend Rumsfeld
WASHINGTON - The Senate's top two Republicans voiced support for Donald Rumsfeld on Friday as allies of the defense secretary sought to outflank increasingly vocal GOP critics in and out of Congress.

"I am confident that Secretary Rumsfeld is fully capable of leading the Department of Defense (news - web sites) and our military forces to victory in Iraq (news - web sites) and the war on terror," Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said in a written statement. "Most importantly he has the confidence of his commanders in the field and our commander in chief."

Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the GOP whip, said Rumsfeld "is an excellent secretary of defense and we are fortunate to have a man of his courage and vision serving the president at this critical time."

Frist and McConnell came to Rumsfeld's defense after several days of GOP criticism aimed at the man who has steered the Pentagon (news - web sites) during the Iraq war and its messy aftermath. More than 1,300 American troops have died since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began in 2003.

4. Ahh the ususal suspects
Frist and McConnell are completely incapable of any independent thoughts. They are Bush's boys down to the bone.

Vision. Yeah, I gues Rummy has vision. Unfortunately what he sees just ain't there.

5. Is anyone keep score on those repugs speaking for and against?
McCain, Lott, and Coleman came out "questioning" Rumsfaild's judgement, then these yahoos issue a statement of support.

Weird.

Who's pulling the strings thse days?
They're all so confused!

9. There is some humor to this--shortly after Nov2 it was noted that
the Repubs would probably eat each other up in the new term given how opposite they are in their own party. It cracks me up to see it happening before they even got their dancin' shoes on.

this plays out, as well. Has anyone heard about him making any statements?
