"We have received one dead and eight wounded," said Dirar Suleiman at the Salam hospital in Mosul, 370 kilometres (250 miles) north of the capital.

"I was in my car in the Dubat district (central Mosul) when a bomb exploded as an American patrol was passing," survivor Abdelkhaleq Mohammed, 32, told AFP at the hospital where he was being treated.

US-led forces have also found a further five dead Iraqis in the city, police said.

"Multinational forces on Thursday discovered five bodies at Mosul. They were all killed by a bullet to the head," a Baghdad policeman said, adding that there was currently no way of knowing the bodies' identities
