Westerners shot and beheaded as masked insurgents hijack car

THREE foreigners of Western appearance were killed by a mob in Mosul yesterday. Two were dragged from a car and shot dead. A third was decapitated as he tried to escape.
Witnesses in Iraq’s third-largest city said that masked insurgents in two cars chased down a white American-made saloon as it drove through a troubled area in the west of the city and seized the four men inside — three foreigners and the driver.



After raking the car with machinegun fire they dragged the passengers out, killed them by the roadside and set fire to the vehicle, throwing their victims’ passports into the burning wreckage. Onlookers said that those killed were carrying pistols — indicating that they may have been security guards — and that ammunition inside the car exploded as it was set on fire. One witness said that before the driver was also killed, he pleaded: “I’m an Iraqi, from Baghdad — don’t shoot.” ......
