U.S. Marine killed in Iraq (1305)
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2002123503_killed18.html

BAGHDAD, Iraq — A U.S. Marine was killed Thursday during fighting in Anbar province west of Baghdad, the U.S. military said yesterday. Following Marine policy, no details were released.

Anbar includes the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi and other Sunni Muslim strongholds.

The death brought to at least 1,305 the number of U.S. service members who have died since the U.S. invasion of Iraq in March 2003. At least 1,022 died as a result of hostile action.

1. Orwellian 'newspeak': "stonghold" means neighborhood.

The Green Zone isn't called a "stronghold" though. :eyes:

8. IRR121704-if the US isn't winning in Fallujah, what's happenin?
Resistance fighters paid no attention to the American call (for
surrender Friday), other than to respond with a declaration
of their own, broadcast from the loudspeakers on some of
the city’s mosques. The Resistance statement said: “Peace
be upon whoever follows guidance. To the occupation
forces, offspring of apes and pigs, we advise you to
give yourselves up. We have not crossed the ocean. We have
not murdered anyone, and we didn’t start this. Therefore, if
you give yourselves up, your punishment will be death. And if
you do not give yourselves up your punishment will also
be death. You can take your appeal and stuff it in your
pockets because we are not going to die the way the
stooges died.”
Commenting on the American appeal, Abu As‘ad ad-
Dulaymi said: “After God granted that the fighters repulse
two violent attacks by the American forces – attacks that
some military commanders said were of the strength of
that launched against the capital Baghdad at the start of the
war – and after we have broken our enemy in al-Fallujah,
the American forces are now taking up this Zionist method to
try to convince the fighters to surrender, after they despaired
of getting them to surrender by force. This is the greatest
proof that they have been broken
militarily.”

The problem w/ using WMD now, all that US has left.
The red states - no problem. Hell, they want us to nuke
the whole damn country like yesterday, and they want to see it
on TV. But what about the 6 billion other motherfuckers
out there? What do we tell them? How do we make it look
like we aren't using it. (Sorry about using MF'rs, but
I think the import of this situation calls for it.)
we aren't losing it?

9. believe this or not-Fremen v Sardaukar?
If this is true, the Fallujah Resistance has just become one
of
the most well armed groups in the world.

equipment abandoned by US forces after their attack on the
city collapsed on Thursday.

Ad-Dulaymi told Mafkarat al-Islam that Resistance
forces captured 181 light, medium, and heavy
machineguns. Pumpaction weapons, considered among
the most important in modern fighting were among the
arms seized from the Americans.

The Resistance also took possession of 194 body
shields, stripped from Americans killed in the fighting. Some
of the body armor had been pierced through by the bullets of
the Resistance fighters.

Also captured were 61 scopes, as well as compasses,
spears and knives, as well as money found by the
Resistance fighters in the pockets of the dead
Americans.

Ad-Dulaymi said that the Resistance had seized 63
Abrams tanks and Bradely armored vehicles, as well as 50
other various vehicles, including Humvees and troop
transports. The Resistance also shot down one US Black
Hawk helicopter in an-Nu‘aymiyah, south of al-Fallujah.

As to the losses suffered by the Resistance, 21
Resistance fighters died as martyrs and 42 others were
injured. Three Resistance rocket launchers, four
120mm mortars and one 82mm mortar were
destroyed.

The al-Fallujah correspondent of Mafkarat al-Islam reported
that local eyewitnesses said that one of the
Resistance commanders said that Friday also was a “great
day.” “Yesterday we were more concentrated,” he said, “and
the number of dead Americans yesterday might be more
than the number killed day before yesterday Wednesday, or if
not then they were not much less.”

On an earlier occasion, Abu As‘ad ad-Dulaymi had said that
500 Americans had died in the fighting on
Wednesday.

13. Junk the tanks, too much fuel, just big fat targets.
Edited on Sat Dec-18-04 12:10 PM by bemildred
I dunno about all the details, but they don't seem to be intimidated.

I would expect to see withdrawal before any use of WMD, and that would
be an admission of defeat. The resistance, if they have any brains,
would head back underground if the US forces make any sort of
withdrawal. And take plenty of plastic sheeting and duct tape ...

I would give my left nut for real data on attrition rates and the
logistics situation.

17. Hard to say, that might actually be better.
Depends on the tactical situation. It must be admitted that
hiding in the tunnels etc. is passive and defensive, and that
given the tactical advantage (a big if) it would be better to
follow it up. OTOH guerillas are usually ill advised to get in
a standup fight with the enemies coventional forces, which would
be my concern there, one could get drawn out into the desert.

32. I doubt this.
Besides the fact that Mafkarat Al-Islam isn't a very reliable source, there's no practical way you could capture all that equipment intact. Crippled or destroyed, maybe, but I still suspect the numbers. This article has the same feel as the news here in the U.S.: our guys killed hundreds of the enemy in a massive battle today, captured much territory/assets, and only lost X number of soldiers. I don't buy it when the Army claims to have killed a hundred plus insurgents, and I don't buy this stuff either.

36. Centcom death numbers out of Fallujah hits worrying trend
The killed marine numbers out of Fallujah have dropped off dramatically since December 14th. Me and some of my friends have been keeping a close eye on Coalition deaths during this war and whenever there is a sudden complete casualties blackout for a short period you know something is not going right. April's fighting in Najaf and Karbala showed a similiar pattern with a complete halt to the death count for a period of 7-10 days before a sudden spike up in deaths one day. I fear the same could happen here quite soon. Over here in Oz the reporting of fighting in and around Fallujah has been pretty bleak for coalition forces lately. Supply lines are severely stretched and resistance in the city is still heavy and appears co-ordinated. I worry because my friend's cousin has been in Fallujah with Oz special Forces and he hasn't contacted my friend for a while. This has happened before however and he normally just rings up out of the blue when you least expect it. Normally uses his "sat" phone and has rung up in the middle of a firefight. He's no macho tough guy and is in fact very clever but has that Ozzie cheek - oh thats right i wonder if ****** ******** wants to hear whats going down in Iraq Ozzie cheek.
Leftchick - your photo of the marine trying to pull his mate out of danger is actually one of a series of four photo's showing this incident. I saw these photos earlier today on a Russian Forum site. The bad news is that the marine doing the pulling doesn;t make it. He goes down in the last photo. Don't know if he''s killed or wounded. However the marine he was trying to pull doesn't look in a good way throughout the four photo shoot. These shots need to get on US media. If the rest of the world is allowed to see US troops getting killed and maimed every day in Iraq why can't the American public see it????
