Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf will continue in his dual role as head of the country's army in defiance of constitutional law.

Musharraf who appointed himself president and head of the army after a military coup in 1999 has become a major ally of the United States in its war against terror.

The U.S. has supported Musharraf and reportedly given him the nod to continue in his military role. Sidelining democracy in Pakistan, Musharraff has consolidated his position as head of the country but provided some consolation to critics by earlier agreeing to relinquish his army role by the end of this year. With only 13 days to go he has shocked many in Pakistan by now saying he will stay on, despite hinting at that possibility in recent weeks.
