Associated Press

JAKARTA, Indonesia — A loud noise several witnesses said sounded like an explosion was heard in parts of the Indonesian capital early Sunday.

News reports said an object that might have been a meteor was seen flashing across the sky above the capital but did not make clear if it had hit the Earth.

Several callers to el-Shinta radio station reported a noise that sounded like an explosion at around 7:30 a.m. local time in western districts of Jakarta.

Metro TV station reported a large object, believed to be a meteor, was seen falling toward the Earth at around the same time, also to the west of the city. The report did not say whether the object had hit the ground.

3. AP update:
Indonesian air force radar detected an unidentified object falling toward the earth at a great speed before disappearing at around the same time as the noise was heard, a military spokesman said on condition of anonymity.

Police have been on high alert in Indonesia in recent days after several Western governments reported that Islamic militants, blamed for a series of attacks in recent years, were planning more bombings.

7. Explode in the atmosphere
That's what most meteors do. Only large ones are able to make it through the atmosphere without burning completely up.

9. Something like Tunguska
IE blow up in the atmosphere or just above ground. Although hopefully not with anywhere near as much force. We've yet to build a nuke that powerful.

11. UFO cited in northwest China still baffling :
World News > Beijing, Dec 15 : Police in northwest China's Gansu province are clueless about an unidentified flying object (UFO) which was sighted by hundreds of people, a media report said today.

The cause of the fireball seen streaking through the night sky on Saturday in Northwest China's Gansu Province has not yet been confirmed, 'China Daily' said in a front-page report.

However, the Gansu Provincial Seismology Bureau recorded that an explosion took place in the suburbs, some 60 kilometres from downtown Lanzhou.

The strange burning object, or what remains of it, had not been found by police, who frantically searched for any tell-tale evidence, it said.

Witnesses in Gansu's capital Lanzhou said a strange shining object swept through the sky at about 11:36 p.M. (2106 hrs IST) December 11, followed by earthshaking sounds like bombing. They also reported that an ensuing tremble was felt within 100 sq km from Lanzhou.

17. Wow!! I was at the anti-war protest in Hollywood tonight when -
my brother and I caught sight of what looked exactly like a meteor breaking up. We really expected to hear something about it on the news. This thing went too far too fast to be anything else and was heading from east to west.

18. Sorry folk... this is probably real.. metoers hit more often than...
we are told.. search online for this and you'll see that several large impacts have happened in the last 100 years even.. like a nuke sized crater in USSR and even the Chicago fire of the mid 1800's was a meteor, we see that from the dozen fires that all started that same night, including towns on the other side of lake Michigan and 1 town that was totally wiped out!... all same night!

24. I saw that too in Northern Cal. last night
It looked like a green shooting star and it flashed and disappeared slightly above San Bruno Mountain (the mountain just south of SF). It was around 9 or 10 last night, Pacific time.
