Mysterious figure at center of Kerik scandal (Nanny? What Nanny?)
Not even those who lived nearby can shed light on nanny's identity
By NINA BERNSTEIN and ROBIN STEIN
New York Times

<snip>

On Wednesday night, Kerik was told that skeptics in city government circles were questioning the existence of the nanny, and he was pressed to provide any kind of evidence to document that she was real. But after taking time to consider the request, Kerik again decided to remain silent on the subject.

Most puzzled about the nanny, perhaps, are former neighbors of the Keriks and their kin. In the Riverdale section of the Bronx, where the family lived in a first-floor apartment for years before moving into the Franklin Lakes mansion they had extensively renovated last year, neighbors did not recall any household help. One neighbor, Dennis Doyle, noted that Kerik's wife, Hala Matli Kerik, a former dental hygienist, not only seemed to care for Celine, a daughter now age 4, by herself, but that she did her own laundry.

In the blue-collar neighborhood of Elmwood Park, N.J., where Hala Kerik's mother, Zakia, lived in a rented duplex for years, neighbors reacted with surprise to questions about a nanny, and noted that Hala Kerik's mother had moved to join her daughter in the Kerik mansion about a year ago.

"They never came around here with a nanny," said Sophie Borsuk, 55, the longtime landlady and downstairs neighbor of Hala Kerik's mother. "I never saw any nanny. This is the first time I heard about a nanny."

The article goes on to say that Kerik did file employment papers on a nanny (on Nov. 17th of this year), but the papers are classified as secret.

1. That's hilarious!
There wasn't even a nanny? I can't wait until someone thoroughly checks this out.

Simply hilarious!

3. When in trouble lie, lie, lie
This is the mantra of this administration. I guess because, the lie is propagated, and when the truth comes out, (weeks later), it is not sensational enough to be noticed!

10. Cop = Professional Liar
It helps if you're a pathological liar to be a cop, although most just stick to the occassional professional lies to ensure a conviction here and there.

This guy's iconoclastic.

2. supposedly she left the country
The NYT reported that she left the country right before his nomination was announced. I wondered at the time, who got rid of her and how?

11. IF there was a Nanny, and she WERE under-age...
that could explain why she can't be found. I don't agree with others that she never existed. But if she were under-age that would make it a serious issue if Kerik had sex with her. If she did not have proper 'work' papers, that would also be an issue. But we're ruling out the 'Chandra Levy' syndrome...that IF there were a Nanny, and if she 'got in the way'... particularly if she were an Alien without family or papers, she could easily have 'disappeared.'

I'm not accusing anything, just questioning the possibility that IF she did exist, why her existence is possibly being hidden now.

6. According to Josh Marshall the NYT report is only what Kerik's lawyer
told them. So Kerik's lawyer told the Times there was a nanny and told the Times that nanny left the country for Mexico. When questioned again as a follow-up the lawyer denied making the statement but the mainstream press kept repeating his first statement.

The whole nanny story is hinky. Josh Marshall has been blogging about it for the past week.

7. Now you know how.
Didn't even cost a plane ticket to get rid of her. I can't wait to find out the details on this vanishing nanny.

Could be. But to fan the flames even more: the disappearing nanny story could be even worse than if she had never existed. What if is organized crime buddies helped her disappear?
It's pure trash for me to speculate in such a way, but the thought crossed my mind. Your explanation, however, is more likely.

12. Sounds too gruesome to have a real nanny
disappear. I hope if she has disappeared that she never existed.

Yes, I think it is far worse for Kerik to have an imaginary nanny, than a real nanny who returned to her place of origin. The real nanny leaving right before the nomination would look very shady.

An imaginary nanny would be such a blatant and outrageous lie. On the other hand, I suspect something from what I read above. Kerik never used the word "nanny". Will they just say his lawyer misspoke? Not reasonable considering he should have clarified that since he knew the word "nanny" was all over the place as an excuse.

If a real nanny was made to "disappear", that would be just dreadful. I can see how you would think of that, but it sounds so extreme to me. (That's because I'm a law abiding citizen.) I hope it didn't happen.

13. I believe the nanny story is just a cover
Not paying employment taxes for a illegal nanny is not as bad as some of the other illegal shady deals in which Kerik is involved. For one, having a girl friend indicted in a multimillion-dollar, mob-run gambling ring. (again per josh marshall's blog)

Could you imagine the uproar if instead of a nanny the media talking heads were talking about Kerik's connections to a mob?

15. I fully agree that the nanny was put forward as an "acceptable excuse".
But, was the nanny real? Did she return to her place of origin?

If she wasn't even real, the nanny excuse really, truly backfires. And it will make everyone take a more thorough look at all Kerik's other misdeeds.

14. hey, I'll sell my story to the National Enquirer
and make a fortune. "I was Kerick's nanny. You won't believe what I saw..." At this point the guy might be relieved if someone turned up.

16. Yes, but you might be
"disappeared" later. Hold out for the movie rights, or don't do it.
