MELVERN, Kan. - A woman charged with killing an expectant mother and cutting the baby from her womb was showing the child off to people at a cafe and to her pastor hours before she was arrested, residents said Saturday.

Lisa M. Montgomery, 36, was charged Friday with kidnapping resulting in murder and was expected to appear in federal court Monday. The baby, whose mother had been eight months pregnant, was in good condition.


Hours before her arrest, Montgomery and her husband showed off a newborn girl at a restaurant, said Kathy Sage, owner of the Whistle Stop Cafe in Melvern, a small eastern Kansas town.


Many customers were surprised to hear the infant was only a day old, Sage said. She knew an Amber Alert had been issued for a baby missing from Missouri but did not realize the infant the Montgomerys carried was connected until hearing from a reporter on Friday.


"You read about this stuff," she said. "It blows you away when it's here. This stuff is supposed to be in New York City or Los Angeles."

Early Friday morning, as frantic news reports aired about the horrific baby snatching, the regulars on the Ratter Chatter site realized the victim was one of their own.

And then they realized that "Darlene" would have met Bobbie Jo on the day she was killed, and that the woman had arranged the deadly meeting through their chat board.

One chatter figured out that the Internet address for Fischer traced back to Kansas - where the baby was eventually recovered at Montgomery's home.

By 8 a.m., several members had called the police with the information they had gathered.

The email address that one of the other members of the board tracked back to Kansas used the moniker "fischer4kids".

The only commonality in this kind of crime is that it's usually older (40s) women.

We had a similar crime in Philadelphia, where a "friend of the family" stole a newborn, set fire to the house, then moved to NJ and presented the child as her own.

The investigators decided that the baby had been killed (without finding a body), but several years later, the mother saw the child at a party, realized what must have happened, and reported it to the police. DNA proved the child was hers (it helped that the little girl was a clone of the mother).

This isn't rural vs urban, white or black - it's just crazy women, usually ones who can't have any more kids.
