NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- The Social Security Administration is rejecting marriage documents issued for heterosexual couples in five communities that performed weddings for gay couples earlier this year.

The agency is rejecting all marriage certificates issued in New Paltz, N.Y., Asbury Park, N.J., Multnomah County, Ore., and Sandoval County, N.M., during the brief periods when those localities recognized gay marriages.

Susie Kilpatrick, 30, of New Paltz, said the local Social Security office told her that no marriage documents from the town could be used to establish identity if they were issued after Feb. 27, when New Paltz's mayor began marrying gay couples. About 125 heterosexual couples have been married since then.

Kilpatrick said her marriage certificate was rejected when she went to get a new card earlier this month so she could take her husband's name.

1. Fanatics would be entertaining
if their stupidity didn't become dangerous once they get into power.

2. If gay people can get married, nobody can get married.
The logic of hatred has no logic.

7. The warped "solidarity" of the right wing
1. Cause someone to suffer
2. Get them to blame their suffering on someone worse off than themselves
3. Convince them that harming someone worse off will make them better

Unity through hate.

9. I was hoping for the opposite effect
Maybe some heterosexual couples will now understand a little of what homosexual couples have to deal with and will be more sympathetic. I sure hope so anyway.

5. How can you get your name changed on your SS Card, then?
When I got married, I had to show them a certified (stamped) copy of my marriage license as well as copies of MY SS card and my husband's SS card to prove that I was who I was before I got married, and that I am taking the name of the person I married (if I chose to do that).

This is *VERY* screwed up.

I can hear the talking heads already: "WEll, see, we KNEW Gay Marriage was going to have these kinds of repercussions. Now STRAIGHT PEOPLE can't even get their names changed or their benefits like they legally deserve because of GAY marriage".....

So does the SSA have a policy to NOT give gay but married couples survivor benefits, etc? Obviously they DON'T, otherwise they would be able to accept all marriage certificates and toss the ones for gays and say "nope, not eligible"....what smarmy pricks.

6. "They're delving into every aspect of our lives, including marriage,"
but it's alright to do it to gay people?

8. California and Gay Marriage
FYI.... Gay Marriage was voted on and rejected in California in 2000.
The bill - known as the Defence of Marriage Act ....

Well read below for details. But what this bill means that until it is overturned - Gay Marriage is illegal in the State of California.

“Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

Prop 22

On March 7, 2000, the people of California voted on Proposition 22, a proposal to enact a state "Defense of Marriage Act" as an initiative statute. The text of Prop 22 reads:

“Only marriage between a man and a woman
is valid or recognized in California.”

Proposition 22 was ratified by an overwhelming majority of California voters, prevailing by a 23-point margin. Statewide, 4,618,673 votes were cast in favor of the proposition, comprising 61.4% of the total vote. Opponents garnered 2,909,370 votes, for 38.6% of the vote.

Final vote counts revealed that Proposition 22 won in 52 of California's 58 counties, including all of the major metropolitan areas except for San Francisco. The six counties which did not approve Prop. 22 were all in the immediate San Francisco Bay area, including: Alameda county, Marin county, San Francisco county, Santa Cruz county, Sonoma county, and Yolo county.

10. My son and his fiancee
will be having a commitment ceremony in New York next fall. They are strong supporters of gay rights and do not feel that it is justice that they, as heterosexuals, can get married but gays cannot in the state. I am so proud of them!
