Sudan 'suspends Darfur offensive'


More refugees arrive at camps in
Darfur every day

Sudan has said it is unconditionally suspending military operations in its Darfur region with immediate effect.

After urgent talks in Khartoum with international envoys, Foreign Minister Mustafa Osman Ismail said that troops would only respond if fired upon first.

However, he ruled out any withdrawal of government troops from positions they had recently taken from rebels.

An African Union spokesman said later that fighting continued in Darfur, and an AU helicopter had been fired on.

A ceasefire deadline passed on Saturday night with no end to the clashes.
