KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Dec 20 (Reuters) - Taliban fighters killed four Afghan police and wounded four others in a drive-by shooting at a checkpoint in south Afghanistan, police said on Monday.

Khan Mohammad Khan, the chief of police for Kandahar province, told Reuters the attack occurred on Sunday evening on the approach to a bazaar in Maywand district, 65 km (41 miles) west of Kandahar city.

He said three militants escaped but one was killed after police returned fire.

On Saturday, two U.S. soldiers were wounded when their patrol came under attack from small arms fire at Shinkay, about 50 km (31 miles) northeast of Qalat, the main city of Zabul, a province neighbouring Kandahar.

1. The war in Afghanistan IN NOT over!
They took 10 years to defeat the Russians and destroy the USSR. It won't take that long to defeat the US...we live across an ocean.

4. The Soviets had control of the air for a while too

That could change in a hurry. My guess would be when someone figures out a way of smuggling into Afghanistan a new line of ground to air shoulder fired missiles that our suppression tactics will not be able to suppress we will leave like the Soviets did.

That is what Reagan/Bush 1 did to the Soviets with the US supplied Stinger missiles during the 1980's in Afghanistan when the US was supporting the Afghan mujahideen. I have a suspicion that there is someone, somewhere, very diligently R and D-ing a similar device right now.
