More lawyers could quit over terror laws

By Joe Murphy, Evening Standard
20 December 2004

Up to five more barristers handling terrorist detention cases may resign this week in a protest over human rights.

They are said to be considering their positions following a Law Lords ruling against the detention without trial of suspects held at Belmarsh prison.

Leading QC Ian Macdonald, one of 15 Special Advocates given security clearance to represent detainees held on suspicion of links with terrorism, has resigned "for reasons of conscience". He wrote in the Mail on Sunday: "I now feel that whatever difference I might make as a Special Advocate-on the inside is outweighed by the operation of a law that is fundamentally flawed and contrary to our deepest notions of justice."

Barry Hugill, of rights group Liberty, said: "We know several-are considering their positions."
