WP: Popular File-Sharing Site Shuts Down (Suprnova.org)
Popular File-Sharing Site Shuts Down

By Peter Svensson
The Associated Press

NEW YORK - One of the Web's most popular file-sharing sites has shut down less than a week after Hollywood announced a flurry of lawsuits against operators of such Internet servers.

A note posted on Suprnova.org, which facilitated sharing among users of the BitTorrent program, said the site was "closing down for good." The collection of links to downloadable files, including music, movies and books, was taken down....

***

Reached via Suprnova.org's chat room, the site's anonymous operator refused to comment on why it had shut down.

Last week, movie studios sued more than 100 operators of U.S. and European sites that host BitTorrent links but did not name the defendants.

Suprnova.org was the most popular repository for links to files that could be downloaded using the BitTorrent program....

1. Damn the RIAA and MPAA to hell...
...I used Suprnova to download TV shows. It was an easy way to watch the shows I like commercial-free and without having cable. Is that cheating? Yes, but it's a small price for society to pay for my not charging what I'm actually due for my services. But now I'm mad, and someone is gonna pay, thru the nose.

Interesting that this warranted a WP news article...

2. Whaaaat? Dammit!
Lawsuits won't actually stop anything, though. As we all remember, there were a bunch of lawsuits against MP3 filesharing programs, and I'm currently downloading 10+ songs from WinMX as I type. THAT worked out well.

6. BitTorrent, yes. Suprnova, no.
BitTorrent is just a P2P network. So that will always be around. However, the most popular 'hub' of that network, suprnova.org, is no longer around.

7. BT is alive
Suprnova was just a site that hosted torrents. There are still many more available to choose from. Suprnova was just the biggest and most popular of the lot.
