Social Security Reverses on Marriages
Social Security Reverses on Marriages

By Associated Press

December 21, 2004, 12:38 AM EST

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- The Social Security Administration reversed course Monday and said it will accept marriage licenses issued for heterosexual couples in communities in New York and Oregon that briefly performed weddings for gay couples earlier this year.

Effective immediately, the agency will accept legally issued marriage documents from Multnomah County, Ore., and New Paltz, N.Y., as evidence of identification on applications for new Social Security cards or to prove marriage for benefits purposes.

The change applies only to marriages between a man and a woman.

The agency initially rejected all marriage certificates issued during the brief periods when officials in Multnomah County, New Paltz, Asbury Park, N.J., and Sandoval County, N.M., wedded same-sex couples.

2. My first thought
do these marriage licenses have an entry for "gender" of each applicant?

if not, how do they know if the applicants are one man and one woman?

What if they get a license where "Pat" marries "Robin"?

3. Not a technicality I suppose, but don't most say "Groom" and "Bride"?
Implies male/female?

4. Did they print up special ones for same-sex couples?
or just cross out "Bride" and write in "Groom" again?

5. Dunno...I guess they could have crossed out both.
or since some were female, crossed out "groom" and wrote in "bride".

6. You know I used to have misgivings about gay marriage
But I really super love my wife and that has got me to thinking. If I can love deeply so can some one else gender not with standing. I say to them go and love in peace, and the state should butt out.

:loveya:

8. I used to be wishy-washy on the whole concept.

I really didnt care one way or the other. But now that I have seen the venomous attacks thrown at those who just want to join together with someone they love and care about it I have become a fighter for the whole concept.

As well as the fact that, anything the conservative Fundamentalists, fight against, I am automatically 180 degrees on the opposite side of.
