Bush Holds First Meeting With NAACP (Yahoo/AP)
WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) met Tuesday at the White House with the outgoing head of the NAACP, the first meeting of his presidency with the nation's oldest civil rights group.

"It was a very frank and a very open dialogue," NAACP President Kweisi Mfume told reporters afterward. "We both have real differences."

<snip>

NAACP board chairman Julian Bond has condemned the administration's policies on education, the economy and the war in Iraq (news - web sites) and urged high black voter turnout to defeat Bush for re-election. And Mfume once described Bush's black supporters as "ventriloquists' dummies."

<snip>

"He was concerned not so much about any potential humiliation of himself, but protecting the office of the presidency from any sort of humiliation that might have occurred," he
(edit-to add "he" = Kweisi Mfume) said. "I think he does have some validity in the fact that protecting the presidency from public humiliation, whether it's he or someone else, as president, is important."

Re: the last paragraph ....... Can anyone cite a more eloquent, diplomatic quote that says one's president is an asshole?

If, in fact, the Democratic leadership are distancing themselves from, or taking for granted, their loyal African American base, shame on them. The most truthful, most scathing, most insightful quotes all seem to come from them.

When all the threads were there about possible DNC chairs, why were none of them black? Mfume would be great.

2. Does anyone find his timing ODD??? I mean....
...he hasn't met with them in 4 years, why now? Maybe to deflect criticism when he'll be accused of enabling racist VOTER SUPPRESSION!!!

Bushco could not talk to the Naacp or any real Blacks,before the election,he obviously did not want to erode his core base support.
