FBI email embroils Bush in jail abuse
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,11765305%255E2703,00.html

snip...

He rejected claims the US President had issued an order allowing inhuman interrogation methods against detainees in Iraq and elsewhere, saying there was "no executive order relating to interrogation techniques. When it comes to military detainees and interrogation methods, those are determinations made by the US Department of Defence".

But the American Civil Liberties Union released copies of a two-page FBI email dated May 22 that refers repeatedly to an executive order signed by Mr Bush which, according to the ACLU statement, "states the President directly authorised interrogation techniques including sleep deprivation, stress positions, the use of military dogs, and sensory deprivation through the use of hoods"....

37. I'm afraid you have an excellent point.
One of my co-workers, a man who tends to be on the conservative side, though no right-winger, has said emphatically that he would prefer any of the recent presidents, including Nixon, to the current Bush, no matter how bad he thought they were during their terms.

26. Yes. The "Person of the Year" story has more legs.
Time we accepted it: we are in a post-rational, post-democratic era, ruled by sensation and fear, and the will of a huge swath of the public is that normal political processes currently do not apply. 9/11 voodoo, people. It has annointed Bush as an American saint, and he is insulated entirely from the failures of his policies and person.

Big Brotha ain't goin' nowhere.

32. Wow, his first impeachable offense!
Actually, not even close. I'm becoming terribly cynical about his impeachable offenses being impeached in actuality. It took me until I was in my mid thirties (the Clinton witchhunt) for me to truly understand that impeachment wasn't about doing something wrong, it's about a certain nasty partisan politics.

34. Nobody cares!!
The biggest problem I have is not convincing people that Bush authorized these "interrogation" techniques but getting people to care about the abuse. Such a large portion of this country just doesn't CARE that we're torturing and killing innocent Iraqis. They see them as somehow deserving it and want to "nuke 'em all!!". I don't get it. Regardless of the fact that Bush authorized torture, how do you get people to realize, simple as it seems, that torture is BAD and we shouldn't do it?!
:scared:

41. It isn't them, so why care?
History does repeat, doesn't it? When the Japanese were put in internment camps during WWII, no one cared. Some even cheered.

When Germans started arresting Jews, no one cared. It wasn't them.

When Germans arrested Gypsies, no one cared. It wasn't them.

When Afrikaners arrested blacks, no one cared. It wasn't them.

When Bush authorized torture of Muslims, no one cared. It wasn't them.
