Saudi Arabia recalls envoy from Tripoli, expels Libyan representative
22-12-2004 , 07:52

Saudi Arabia declared Wednesday it was withdrawing its ambassador to Tripoli and ordered out Libya's representative following reports that the latter plotted to assassinate Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah. According to a "statement of facts" filed by U.S. prosecutors during the trial of Abdurahman Alamoudi, Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi wanted Abdullah killed after a March 2003 Arab League Summit during which the two exchanged sharp insults.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud announced the measures, noting the Libyans would be sent a communique later Wednesday demanding that their envoy in Riyadh go home.

According to the AP, he said the Saudi Embassy in Tripoli and the Libyan Embassy in Riyadh would remain open, stressing Saudi authorities did not wish the Libyan people suffer, mainly with the upcoming annual pilgrimage to holy sites in the kingdom.
