N.H. boy receives Christopher Reeve's van
How about some "warm fuzzy"-feel-good news for Xmas Eve...

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) -- Christopher Reeve played a superhero in the movies, and now, two months after his death, he's a superhero to a 14-year-old boy.

Tyler Howard of Charlestown is a quadriplegic and has been in a wheelchair for 10 years. On Thursday, Reeve's family gave Howard the late actor's specially modified van, so he can get around with his wheelchair and other medical equipment. "I'm free, I'm free," Howard said. "I can go where I want."

Howard said he always wanted to be able to attend school functions, visit classmates and go to church and family outings. Until now, he could only go to school and his doctor's appointments.

"I hope the van brings you great joy and freedom as it did for Chris," wrote Dana Reeve, the actor's widow, in a letter.

2. What a kind and generous thing for Dana Reeve to do. What a beautiful
gesture, giving it to a kid.

16. It's not a very long drive from New Hampshire to ...
... Canada. With the van, he might be freer than many.

12. Super man. Super family.

God bless the Reeves. I have a fantasy that if there is an afterlife where anything amazing could happen, Chris Reeve is emerging, as a baby, from a crashed rocket in a cornfield...

13. Oh my God. I cried when I read this.
I needed more good news from "out there", which I have been calling the world outside the doors of my house, since the election. The Desolation of this administration, with its cold calculating arrogance, has me so sad, and to read this helps renew my faith in people.

I'm so happy for that little boy.

18. There's a picture of this kid
on the front page of the Concord Monitor today. It's not on the internet site. He's sitting in his wheelchair in front of the van and his eyes are amazing...bright, happy, intelligent and full of life.

Edited on Sun Dec-26-04 09:12 AM by Historic NY
I had a friend who was a quad after a swimming pool accident, he lived a good life despite his condition until his 50th yr. I took care of him for 3yrs after the accident. Some people just don't realize how big a thing this is. To get out, to see things, to go places; it all make a difference in extending his life. Way to go Superman.............. :loveya:
