China deliberates secession law
From correspondents in Beijing
December 25, 2004
CHINA'S legislature on Saturday began deliberating a proposed “anti-secession law” aimed at preventing Taiwan from declaring formal independence, the Xinhua news agency said.

The draft law was submitted to the standing committee of the National People's Congress for first deliberation, Xinhua said, without giving details.

The standing committee Saturday opened a five-day meeting to discuss the draft legislation but the Chinese Government had not said when the legislature would make a decision on the contents of the law.
