Tidal Waves Kill More Than 2,200 in Asia
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20041226/ap_on_re_as/indonesia_earthquake_15

JAKARTA, Indonesia - The world's most powerful earthquake in 40 years triggered massive tidal waves that slammed into villages and seaside resorts across Asia on Sunday, killing more than 2,200 people in five countries.

Tourists, fishermen, homes and cars were swept away by walls of water unleashed by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake, centered off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

Government and hospital officials both in Sri Lanka and India said 1,000 people had been killed in each of those countries. More than 200 were reported killed in Indonesia, 61 in Thailand and 10 in Malaysia. Hundreds were reported missing, and the death toll was expected to rise.

The U.S. Geological Survey (news - web sites) said the quake was a magnitude-8.9. Geophysicist Julie Martinez said it was the world's fifth-largest since 1900 and the largest since a 9.2 quake hit Prince William Sound Alaska in 1964.

The effects of the quake reverberated throughout the region, as waves as high as 20 feet crashed into coastal villages over a wide area.

7. This is a HUGE story and CNN doesn't notice
BBC had wall-to-wall coverage of the tidal-wave disaster. When they went off the air at 6:30, I switched to CNN. CNN seems to have barely noticed. Too busy with Christmas stories.

12. Its been covered non stop on CNNs International station
in London so it must just be the version of CNN shown in the US that is not covering this disaster. Obviously, the people in Atlanta think that Americans are just not interested.

14. I turned on CNN
First time since Oct. Figured they WOULD have coverage.
NOTHING.

I am so far beyond disgusted with 'our' media' I could just cry.

This is a MASSIVE tragedy, massive- and not one word during the time I was looking. What is wrong with these 'red' people?

9. They seem to be finally noticing
Takes CNN a while to pick up on news that that doesn't directly affect Americans. Why talk about thousands of Asians washed off of beaches when Americans are missing their luggage?

10. Here's an earthquake activity link for you...
www.syzygyjob.com - if you want to see maps and scientific info, follow the links. Left side of home page, under Earthquakes, click on activity links, go to world quakes link, go to Eastern hemisphere, Australia area shows it near Sumatra, states that it is the fifth largest quake since 1900.This is lkely to go very high. Just a day or so ago was the one year anniversary of a large quake in Iran that killed 26,00 to 30,000 people, perhaps more in a city of 120,000 people. We're Californians so we notice these things easily.
