Two moderate earthquakes rock Philippines
The two earthquakes were not powerful enough to cause tsunamis and were not linked to Sunday's undersea Asian earthquake of epic power that sent huge deadly walls of water crashing down on beaches in eight countries, killing more than 11,600 people.

The first temblor struck at 4:08 a.m. (2008 GMT Sunday) and was centered near northern Olongapo city, about 113 kilometers (70 miles) southwest of Manila.

NPR news mentioned
the earthquake that just hit India was strong enought to upset the Earth's axis...

upset is understated.

9. Someone reported that the rotation of the earth was disturbed.
If I find the link, I'll post it. They didn't mention the consequences of that.

15. Link to disturbance of earth's rotation:
Seattle Post-Intelligencer:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/apscience_story.asp?category=1501&slug=Quake%20Explainer

Enzo Boschi, the head of Italy's National Geophysics Institute, likened the quake's power to detonating a million atomic bombs the size of those dropped on Japan during World War II, and said the shaking was so powerful it even disturbed the Earth's rotation.

"All the planet is vibrating" from the quake, he told Italian state radio. Other scientists said it was early too say whether the rotation was affected by the quake.

the "rotaton" of the planet. Not to rag on you, but this kind of bogus crap info just irks the shit outta me...

In neither place did they provide details, or explain what consequences could be expected, etc.

31. There is something called the Chandler Wobble
It may be excited by earthquakes. It is a very small effect, somewhat akin to precession.

http://bowie.gsfc.nasa.gov/ggfc/sbm_cos.html

Co-seismic Excitation of Earth Rotational
and Gravitational Changes
At a Glance
A seismic event, apart from the "shaking" that is the earthquake, leaves behind permanent, step-function-like dislocations in the Earth. This redistribution of mass changes the Earth's inertia tensor; and the Earth's rotation will change according to the conservation of angular momentum. Such is the co-seismic excitation of Earth rotation changes. Similarly this mass redistribution causes the Earth's gravitational field to undergo slight changes expressible in terms of changes in its harmonic Stokes coefficients. The question is whether such excitations are large enough to be of any significance or consequence. The answer is mixed, as highlighted below:

39. Considering that
we're moving at about a thousand miles an hour because of the earths rotation, a small desturbance would likely have the same effect as hitting a stationary object at highway speeds. Better instal airbags in your house!

16. The guy that is filling in for Art Bell on
"Caost to Coast" tonight just mentioned the report that the earth's rotation has been effected, the whole planet is vibrating from the quake and the island nation of Sumatra has been moved 100 feet south of where it was two days ago. Holy shit. CNN has been running the CNN International feed for the past hour, with footage of the incoming waves and damage. Horrifying.

32. The planet always "rings" after a big earthquake
It takes a few days for the vibrations to stop, although they get progressively smaller in amplitude. There can be a very slight effect on the earth's rotation (Chandler wobble) from earthquakes, although there is still debate on how significant this is. I don't know about the 100 foot displacement - that seems pretty large. But, after all, an earthquake is a displacement in the earth's crust, and this was about as big an earthquake as has been recorded.

36. absolutley fascinating -- listened to BBC until late into the morning
23 THOUSAND people have died so far. where are the vigils? where is the sense of proportion? isn't that about half as many american soldiers who died in vietnam? isn't that like 6 times the people who died on 911? this number is mind numbing.

we are all sri lankans are we not?

42. Those are worthwhile points
My morning paper had front page stories on the earthquake and tsunami, but at least equal space was given to what happened to westerners (maybe a few dozen) as to what happened to Asians (tens of thousands). On the other hand, were the same thing to happen here (say on the west coast of North America), I suspect Asian newspapers would also devote disproportionate amounts of space to the fate of their locals who happened to be in North America at the time, or immigrant groups that originally came from their own region. I think this is human nature, and probably reflects our early evolutionary history in small groups. I don't think people should beat themselves up over this phenomenon, but they should try to overcome the tendency, in thought and deed, as much as they can.

I also think people respond differently to acts of nature or God than they do to acts of men. Quite rightly in my opinion. The suffering caused by war and human cruelty is (in principle) avoidable, while that caused by acts of nature is not (although poverty can make it worse, so even there human cruelty comes into play). I suppose this difference makes people more accepting of death when it comes through natural means.

As an example, I recently found out a young relative of mine has inoperable cancer - oddly, it made me even more angry at Bush's war because those young people were dying because of an explicit human choice, to go to war. Death always seems like a waste, so when it can be traced to the unnecessary decisions of a small cabal of evil men it seems like waste heaped on waste.

We should give whatever help is possible to the victims of these acts of nature, though, whether through government channels or private charity. I am in Canada and I fully expect that our government will and should give substantial aid to the region, and I don't begrudge any tax dollars of mine for that purpose.

Connecting the Full moon with Earthquakes, but the connection was weak (While more earthquakes ocurred during a full moon than other simialr time periods, the difference may just have been statistic error). Subsequetly it was dropped do to the New Madrid fault from casuing an earthuake in 1990 (as had been predicted). Subsequet research on New Madrid indicts that New Madrid may be a once in 300 year earthquakes not the once every 200 years that people have believed to be the case (The debate continues and will continue till New Madrid quakes again).

The rational for the connection was weak also, the Rationale being the pull of the moon added stresses to already stressed plates, thus while it was the plates that snaped, the reason their snaped was do to things within the earth, the moon seems (if it did anyhing) just gave the already stresed point additional stress so the point snaped.

Some articles on this subject (Given how big the New Madrid Prediction of 1990 was I as surprize at the lack of Articles on the prediction):
