5. BBC: Shun Iraq poll, says 'Bin Laden'
An audio tape attributed to Osama Bin Laden has called on Iraqis to boycott elections scheduled for 30 January.

The voice, whose identity cannot be confirmed, says: "Anyone who takes part in these elections will be an infidel."

The recording also backs Jordanian-born militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as the al-Qaeda network's leader in Iraq, Arabic TV station al-Jazeera reported.

<...>

The tape describes Zarqawi as the "emir" of al-Qaeda in Iraq and praises the "daring operations" of his group against US troops and Iraqi officials.

<...>

Adam Ereli, a spokesman for the US State Department in Washington, said it had not yet been determined whether the speaker was Bin Laden.

6. Voice on Tape Is Likely Bin Laden's -US Official
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. intelligence officials have concluded an audiotape on which Osama bin Laden urges Iraqis to boycott January's elections is likely genuine, an official said on Monday.

The intelligence officials assessed after a technical analysis that the voice on the tape was likely that of the al Qaeda leader, the official said. Sound quality on the tape is not very high, the official added.

The speaker on the tape, excerpts of which were broadcast by Arabic television channel Al Jazeera, also praised attacks by al Qaeda ally Abu Musab al-Zarqawi on U.S. troops and government officials in Iraq and said anyone who takes part in the elections would be an "infidel."

8. Hurrah! This proves Bush was right to invade Iraq. (not)
Edited on Mon Dec-27-04 06:57 PM by daleo
That is the implication of these stories. Of course, even if true, it was Bush's invasion that gave Zarquawi the freedom of movement inside Iraq, as Saddam Hussein had him contained in the U.S. controlled no-fly zone in northern Iraq.
