Campus club seeks right to exclude gays
A legal confrontation is playing out here as a student organization seeks official recognition and money from a state-run university even though the students plan to exclude non-Christians and gays.

A group of Christian students at Arizona State University's law school formed a chapter of the Christian Legal Society, a national organization that unites Christian lawyers and law students for fellowship, mutual legal support, meetings and Bible readings.

2. On the flip side, an atheist club can exclude christians, and
a democratic club can exclude republicans. DUHHH! I think this exclusionary rule (which IS constitutional, by the way) is good.

7. Political groups on campus
Well duh! The Dem and Rethug groups cannot and do not receive funds from the university. Most universities do not allow political groups to receive funding, some don't allow any religious groups to receive funding either. In some cases, this also applies to groups like PETA, SADD, and other groups that may have a political agenda. It will mainly depend on their mission statement, which has to be approved before the group can be recognized. So, as far as I am concerned, this group can be recognized, but they shouldn't receive a dime in student funds!

24. An atheist club that excludes Christians should not receive ...
public funding.

And from the article:
'A person who engages in homosexual conduct or adheres to the viewpoint that homosexual conduct is not sinful would not be permitted to become a member or serve as an officer" of the group at Arizona State, the suit adds.

It goes on to say that a person who has engaged in homosexual acts but has "repented" or people who may have homosexual inclinations but do not act on those inclinations would be eligible for membership.'

Does this mean that any Christian who belongs the club who is known to have 'sinned' (according to the club's ideology) will be excluded from membership? This doesn't sound like a club for Christians -- it sounds like a club for saints. Supposedly, Christian ideology says that humans are imperfect, subject to sinning. So by their own ideology, EVERYONE should be excluded from membership.

28. This is terrible racism and sexualitism
I have always been against the exclusions of the gays from a civil discourse, and this is just another examlple of the right winger takong on the found ing fathers and going against the example of now we now LIncoln even was a gay.. so let's get things in presepective! please right wingers! and ia am a christian, proud attender of a Baptistic Church, and i am always encouraging the preachers to sing songs of tolerance.. one of the finest church's in Memphis if you ask me.

27. Where exactly are these atheist clubs?
I have a hunch that if such things exist, they wouldn't actually bar Christians, although they might tell them not to proselytize.

4. That's fine, just not on my dime
Is there no national office of the Christian Legal Society that can fund these college groups? C'mon, what could their yearly budget possibly be? $5000 for office supplies, etc, and honoraria?

5. I fail to see why this is a problem
Groups exclude people all the time. When is the last time you tried to join the Harvard Black Alumni Association or the University of Minnesota Gay Swimmers group. They use university assets, get money, and solicit on campus.

No, they can't exclude anyone because it's a public institution. It's recieving public funds.

If I wanted I could join the National Society of Black Engineers, even though I'm not black.

8. They can exclude non-Christians...
Edited on Tue Dec-28-04 02:25 PM by GOPFighter
...but I'm not sure about gays. Some states have laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual preference. However, if they ban gays (they consider homosexuality a sin), shouldn't they also ban anyone who's divorced and remarried, and those who have fornicated? Jesus specifically defined those as sins, he never said a word about homosexual relationships. And what about gays who have never had a homosexual relationship?

Whatever happened to "Love the sinner, hate the sin"?

Just another reason I left the church...

10. Of Course They Do! They've Been Embolded By Faith-Based Bigotry...
... of Bush* and other homophobic zealots who vilify gay Americans.

They need to be careful... if people fight this, then they'll be labeled as being anti-Christian.

12. I don't like the idea
of excluding gays but what bothers me most is their identifying themselves as Christian and then behaving in, what I consider, a most unchristian way.

If another group of Christians who would include gays formed an opposing group I suppose these bigots would yell to high heaven about them using "Christian" in their name and probably file a frivolous lawsuit against them.

18. Sadly , they seem like folks just looking for some attention
and they think the best way to get it is to show people how mature and loving they are by forming a group (like we kids did when I was eight or nine in the school yard..we pretended we didn't like girls so they would pay attention to us..sort of worked but in a bad way) that excludes others...much like the rich do to show how far they have come in the world, sad really.

I say let them have it, it makes it easier to see who attends their meetings and helps with there fund-raising so you can avoid them in the future.

You're only a fool when you don't know what a fool looks like.

Edited on Tue Dec-28-04 03:43 PM by IanDB1
I'm going to start a college club called, "The Ian Club."

In this club, I will exclude everyone who is not me.

Then, I will ask the college to fund The Ian Club.
