Huge explosion in or near Muskogee, OK 2 minutes ago
I live 20 miles north of there and it rattled the house violently. Listening to the sheriff dep't on the scanner, hundreds of calls. No idea what the hell is going on, but it must be serious. There aren't any refineries or chem factories there...will keep listening. Terists?
sheesh...
sorry no links yet, obviously...

Just read this... Not trying to alarm anyone... Stay safe!

Vibrations From Indonesian Quake Felt In Oklahoma
Geological Survey Records Shockwaves From Massive Quake

POSTED: 1:36 pm CST December 28, 2004

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Jolts from the enormous earthquake in Indonesia that killed thousands were felt in Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Geological Survey in rural Tulsa County recorded shock waves from the 9.0-magnitude quake beginning at 7:13 p.m. Saturday, 15 minutes after the temblor occurred beneath the Indian Ocean.

The largest waves, with a .12-inch vertical movement in Oklahoma, were logged at 7:36 p.m., local time.

"This is the type of earthquake that's recorded by every seismograph in the world, and recorded very clearly," said Jim Lawson, chief geophysicist with the OGS. "This is almost the biggest earthquake that could occur."

The large waves felt in Oklahoma may have caused water in Oklahoma ponds and lakes to slosh back and forth slowly, a motion called a seiche, Lawson said. It also may have caused some tall buildings in the state to sway slightly, he said.

36. building blew up
Edited on Tue Dec-28-04 09:34 PM by cleofus1
http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/12/28/building.explosion.ap/index.html

"RAMSEY, Minnesota (AP) -- An explosion flattened a commercial building Tuesday, killing two workers and critically injuring a third. Rescue crews were searching the ruins for another worker.

The blast caved the single-story building into its basement, sheriff's Capt. Robert Aldrich said. The site was littered with cinder blocks, fragments of concrete and pieces of office furniture.

A gas leak was the most likely cause of the explosion, but nothing was immediately ruled out, Aldrich said."

71. I was chief pilot for Tom's daddy's company from 1969 to 1980.
I have known Tom VERY well personally since he was a snot-nosed teenager, and his daddy, O.W. Coburn (the most horny letch I've ever run across)...I flew them both all over the country for many years. Was fired 3 different times because I wouldn't set up O.W. with whores on trips (that's a fairly normal task for corporate pilots and most of them will comply)...so I can truly say I know Coburn pretty well. (The old man croaked in 1984. I sent flowers for some reason and got a nice thankkyou note from his widow Joy, a very nice lady who rode in my airplane hundreds of times)

called and said there was no way that there were 10 people there.

3 workers and a security guard.

but that doesn't count how many might have been nearby

the original 10 dead figure came from Civil defense

I hope no one was killed.

also just said on news to "keep windows up" as they are "assessing" the toxicity of the smoke pouring through Muskogee right now.

64. and this at KOTV
small blip-

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) -- A scrap metal plant in Muskogee exploded Tuesday evening, blowing the windows out of nearby houses and businesses and filling the sky with heavy dark black smoke.

Witness say the explosion sounded like a bomb.

"I was sitting on the couch and it blew me off the couch," said John Hammons, who lives near the Yaffe Iron and Metals plant.

A night shift was working in the plant and officials believe there may be fatalities, but none had been confirmed.

There are reports of several major fires at the plant and in the neighborhood near the facility. Authorities say the Lakeland Shopping Center located near the plant was also heavily damaged.

75. Live chopper video on KTUL right now showing lots of fires burning
their mountaintop webcam showing big "orange glow" from 40 miles away.
Doing house to house search checking on people, several houses on fire.
There've been calls from 40 miles away from people who felt or heard the blast. Abandoned Homeland (Safeway) store being used as shelter for people evacuated, fires still going strong. a big mess. I guess it's our response to the tsunami. :eyes:

88. not sure, but this picture of a blast furnace explosion in Wales...
... looks pretty severe. The Wales incident killed three workers, and injured eight. I believe that in Muskogee, they fear the deaths of at least two.

Two Missing, Four Hurt in Plant Blast

Wednesday December 29, 2004 5:01 AM

By CLAYTON BELLAMY
Associated Press Writer

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) -
A scrap metal plant in eastern Oklahoma exploded Tuesday evening, sending fiery debris into the air and blowing out windows of nearby homes.

Two people working at the Yaffe Iron and Metals plant at the time remained unaccounted for, and at least four people were injured by flying debris, officials said.

Debris from the plant was tossed up to 10 blocks away and a nearby shopping center was damaged, said Michelann Ooten, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management.

Witnesses said the explosion at about 8 p.m. sounded like a bomb and the blast could be felt in the next county, about 30 miles away.

93. Kick and thank you . . .
Just telephoned my parents, who live between the OG & E plant and Braggs, and they heard the explosion (said they heard more than one) but didn't know what it was. They initially thought the "sound of thunder" came from the OG & E plant, but now Mom's checking the news and Net, and calling my brother, who lives in Muskogee.

Thanks, DU. My mom's pretty impressed that DU gets "local news" to Switzerland faster than the mainstream media.
