Kremlin indignant at Ukraine’s initiative to exculpate fascist accomplices

Russia’s Foreign Ministry and Duma deputies strongly condemned Ukraine’s Prime Minister Anatoliy Kinakh’s proposition to acknowledge former SS Galicia troops, who fought on the side of fascist Germany against the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War, war veterans. The Kremlin is deeply concerned that if Viktor Yuschenko’s bloc wins the forthcoming elections, Ukraine’s radical nationalist circles, comprised of grandchildren of those who used to kill our grandfathers in Western Ukraine right up till the middle of the 50s of the 20th century, may come to power in Ukraine. During World War II the Ukrainian Insurrectional Army fought on Hitler’s side for independence of Ukraine.

As was reported earlier, on March 13, 2002, Kinakh declared for the exculpation of the Ukrainian Insurrectional Army soldiers to restore the historical justice and Ukraine’s national unity. In the meantime, a few days ago the Ivano-Frankivsk city council decided to recognize the former SS Galicia soldiers as Great Patriotic War veterans.

6. Let me throw in a little pre-emptive strike here on those

who undoubtedly will use this nonsense to tout their pro-Russian views, by noting that there were plenty of reasons for Ukrainians to support whomever was fighting the Russians. Perhaps the biggest one was that just a few years before WWII got going Stalin forced-starved Ukraine by having all their grain and other products shipped out to Russia and imposing confiscatory taxes on even things like your family apple tree (which meant you chopped the thing down, since you had no cash for the taxes). Estimates range from 3-5 million Ukrainians starved to death in this artificial famine. Would you want to fight to save the Russian Motherland after that? - K

policies of the United States...you really ought to...otherwise this thread is about the Ukraine and the almost slavish attention being piled om the head of the "saintly" Ukraine "opposition" leader...who, if you've been paying attention, has urged his followers to disrupt the lawful funtioning of the government until the new government can be inaugurated.
