Lieberman: Iraq Election Must Go Forward
WASHINGTON - Sen. Joe Lieberman (news - web sites), traveling in the Middle East Wednesday, said there is strong support in Iraq (news - web sites) for the Jan. 30 election, and postponing it would only be a victory for the insurgents.

In a telephone call from Tel Aviv, Israel, the Connecticut Democrat said conditions in Iraq, including an increase in trained Iraqi security forces, have improved since his last visit in July. And he said the escalating violence aimed at intimidating Iraqis to postpone the election or not vote is not working in most of the country.

His comments came just days after Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) called for an election boycott, and after the largest Sunni Muslim political party announced its withdrawal from the election because of security concerns.

"Senator Lieberman and I had a pretty clear indication from the deputy prime minister and a couple of his associates that at least some of them may be wanting to find a reason to postpone the election," said Sen. Mark Dayton (news, bio, voting record), D-Minn. "We emphasized that we thought it was imperative that the election be held as scheduled."

2. What actually happens
if they do not have elections anyway. Are things somehow going to be worse or is this just some legal smoke and mirrors for the war profiteers and US based businesses setting up shop over there?

3. You nailed it! Even if elections are held it will
still be US-driven. Chaos will continue. I am waiting for someone in government to say Enough already! Let's get out of Iraq and let the chips fall where they may. When, and if, we leave the Iraqis will do as they please. We can't change that.

6. saw Lieberman on Fox's Sunday whoreshow a couple o years ago
being interviewed from a remote location, they were showing him before the interview he had his eyes down reading and his face was twitching all over very bizarrely,I wish I had it on tape, there is something very twisted about him, probably that he is a religiously insane guilt-freak

12. Lieberman WANTS hundreds of Iraqis to be KILLED at the polls

in addition, it angers me that he pretends to be conducting OUR Government business, at OUR expense, when in reality, Lieberman went to Tel Aviv on HOLIDAY and to visit with his relatives....

someone should ask what this lieberman junket is costing the American taxpayers....

13. The election'll go forward. People will continue to die and
it will be called a success by our government.

Won't matter how many polling places blow up. Won't matter how many are gunned down while attempting to vote...won't matter how many are too afraid to get near a polling place. Won't matter if just 10 people vote...won't matter if they have to hire people to vote...

In America, that's defined as success these days....and some Americans will eat it up and praise the efforts of George W. Bush.

and that's OUR reality.

20. Exactly. Just a repeat of what happened in Afghanistan
They got a picture of a lady posing at the voting poll. All the so called liberal media declared what a great thing this was. The BushCo backed candidate won. Victory declared.

The fighting and death and the drugs are the same as before.

23. Remember Karzai's "you can vote more than once if you want" speech?
TOTAL sham.

And Holy Joe should realize (and likely DOES) that he offered up perhaps the worst possible symbolism by calling from where he did.

Oy.

...even though 1/4 of the Iraqi population refuses or won't be able to vote. But it'll still be a fair and democratic election, dammit!

Edited on Thu Dec-30-04 08:08 PM by Barkley
We have the need to feel that our actions have helped bring civilization to these "backwards/ inferior" people.

How else can you justify killing 100,000 people that no posed threat to America?

The Spanairds did the same to the Native Americans when they came to America in search of gold.

It was Christianity that the heathens needed and the gold the Spainards needed.

Today, its democracy the heathens need and oil that Americans need.

True democracy is incompatable with US strategic and economic interests in the middle east.
