Canal memos show coverup by Pataki's office
http://www.theithacajournal.com/news/stories/20050101/localnews/1815347.html

ALBANY -- Hundreds of pages of internal memos and e-mails made public Friday reveal how Gov. George Pataki's administration tried to control the damage done by news stories about a since-discredited deal to sell development rights along the Erie Canal for a rock-bottom price.

They show Pataki aides directing the public responses made by the Thruway Authority and Canal Corp. to questions about the deal granting Buffalo developer Richard Hutchens exclusive building rights along the 524-mile canal system for just $30,000.

And they show the Republican administration was irate when Democratic state Comptroller Alan Hevesi nixed the deal -- because Pataki had wanted to do the same thing.

<snip>

In email exchanges, draft press statements and fact sheets, Pataki aides tried to discredit critics as partisans and publicity seekers and to come up with strategies to restore credibility.

One draft statement has canal officials criticizing Brodsky's investigation as a "never-ending political witchhunt" and "baseless attacks on responsible private-sector development."

2. George Pataki
-- reminds me some of Paul Ford's character of the mayor in THE MUSIC MAN.

It would be so Nice if he got busted for running a crooked show in New York. I get sick of his face being stuffed down my throat when I'm watching tv.

4. Don't blame you one bit.
The NYTimes reports that Pataki aspires to higher office, but I couldn't tell exactly which one -- the White House or Senate or what.

It seems as if he would be unelectable in the Republican primaries like South Carolina.

Yes, I agree with you on Pataki in Florida.
