FAA: O'Hare plan OK on environment

No major environmental roadblocks have been uncovered by an analysis of Chicago's planned expansion of O'Hare Airport, according to a Federal Aviation Administration study that is to be released Thursday.

The draft of the agency's environmental statement on the impact of building new runways was completed a month ahead of schedule, FAA officials said.

That prompted Mayor Richard Daley to ask the FAA to speed its timetable for issuing a decision on the massive project, enabling the city to break ground for new runways as early as summer. The city hopes to open the first new runway in 2007 and complete the eight-runway reconfiguration in 2013.
