4. John Wagner is a reporter for the Raleigh News and Observer.
And he is covering Edwards. He's a "pencil" - not a blow-dried tv guy.

7. Have they asked why....
he can't make the NAACP event on Monday?

He's missed 27% of the Senate votes during the campaign so some venues have been important enough to him to rearrange his schedule. I wish they'd ask him about this one. It may be acceptable if there is a crucial vote but he needs to make the effort to explain.

8. Describing Edwards as energetic, passionate, confident.
Sorry, no reference to the NAACP event. I wish Edwards were going, because I think he has the MOST appeal to black voters of all the candidates. There must be a good reason. BTW, I think he's only missed 18% of the votes. But I'll check that later. I've got to run now.

But I thoroughly enjoyed seeing and hearing Mr. Edwards.

9. As of July 10-

Finally, having missed "only" 27 percent of the votes, is Edwards. But, once again, his choice of issues on which to hide does not shed any positive light on his job performance. Edwards neglected to weigh-in on five budget appropriations votes, two partial-birth abortion votes - including the ban's passage - and four nominee confirmation votes.

16. Read two weeks ago, Edwards hasn't missed a single vote in which
his vote would have made the difference. In at least one case and maybe more, he canceled a campaign event to go back to DC to make a vote which would make a difference.

Scratch the surface of this anti-Edwards spin, and you learn that he has been balancing campaigning and being a Senator in an extremely competent manner.

11. The NAACP rearranged the schedule for him once.
They registered 2 million NEW voters in 2000. It looks as though he is undervaluing this vital block of the Democratic party.

The NAACP rearranged their entire schedule for John Edwards? Somehow I don't think the NAACP can revolve their schedule for one guy. It would show preference.

He's not undervaluing black people at all. A number of his state campaign chairs are black, he was the only one willing to abide by the NAACP's boycott of South Carolina's tourism industry, etc. etc. I'm black, I don't feel undervalued--not to mention that the NAACP is hardly representative of the entire black population. Missing one or two events is not going to turn black people against him.

13. Yes, they did
According to the NAACP pres and an Edwards spokeswoman-

Mfume saved his strongest criticism for Edwards, who credits black voters with handing him his 1998 victory over an incumbent Republican. The Edwards campaign asked the NAACP in May to rearrange its convention schedule to accommodate the senator.

''I'm particularly perplexed by his actions,'' Mfume said. ``We dropped everything for him.''

Edwards spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri acknowledged asking for a changed date but said the second date also was inconvenient.

Palmieri said late Saturday that the campaign was still trying to figure out a way for Edwards to attend. If that didn't work out, she said, ``We will turn our schedule upside down to find a time when we can come to Miami.''

Looks like he still has a chance to do the right thing. I hope he does.

14. That's ridiculous.
Edited on Sun Jul-13-03 02:10 PM by tjdee
On the part of the NAACP.

Why would they rearrange everything like that? Not smart. It gives them something to hold over his head, so there's that I guess. I have never heard of an organization building their schedule around one person in a nine person competition/race. As I said, it implies preferential treatment, and that is not appropriate.

Thank you for the link--as for Edwards himself, I still maintain that missing two events won't make or break him in the black community. This is more of a scheduling issue. He's still got this thing in Iowa Monday now, and he has to question Tenet on Wednesday.

Obviously there was some sort of disconnect between his campaign and the NAACP,which is ridiculous. I hope he shows up to put all this to rest, though.

17. The Hill had an article pointing out Mfume is a paid consultant for Kerry
If Edwards is competing with Kerry, Mfume is going to hit Edwards hard.

Mfume is on Kerry's payroll! Geez. What a ho. I like Kerry, but Mfume is not an honest broker here.
