Schwarzenegger Takes Heat Over 'Three Stooges' Comment
Critics Say Name-Calling Is Departure From Past Talk Of Bipartisanship

POSTED: 4:13 pm PST January 19, 2005
UPDATED: 5:17 pm PST January 19, 2005

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is stirring new controversy with another colorful description of his critics. This time, he's comparing them to the "Three Stooges."

Schwarzenegger steered clear of controversy before a tourism group in Los Angeles Wednesday, declining to answer questions from reporters. But his remarks on Tuesday to the Sacramento Bee, responding to criticism of his school budget, are causing quite a stir.

"If someone says this is cuts, you're cutting education, whoever the Three Stooges are that are running around saying I'm cutting education are out of their mind," Schwarzenegger said.

Schwarzenegger was applying the "Three Stooges" label to three constitutional officers who are all Democrats: state Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell, state Treasurer Phil Angelides and Attorney General Bill Lockyer.

36. Accents
are difficult or impossible to overcome. Except in very rare cases, any sound a child is not exposed to during his first year of life will be forever out of his reach. That is why foreign-born adults who learn to speak a new langauge perfectly in terms of grammar and vocabulary may nevertheless be unable to shake the accent that comes from their native language.

Remember Henry Kissinger?

There are many reasons to be pissed at Ahhnuld, but the fact that he speaks with an accent isn't one of them.

I don't think so. My husband is german and you can
barely detect an accent. He certainly wasn't exposed in
his first year. I think he took english when he was 8 or so.

There's no excuse for Arnold. His grammar is horrendous.
Perhaps he just doesn't feel it's important.

46. Yeah I was a psych major and I hear where you are coming from
BUT there is NO excuse for an accent that strong. You are talking about hearing certain phonemes before a ceratin age. While what you are saying is true, it is the reason you will always be able to detect a trace of an accent. Not the reason someone continues to have an accent so damn strong you can barely understand them. I think it is his schtick, personally.

There are many reasons to be pissed at Ahhnuld, and the fact that he speaks with that thick accent IS one of them.

"I can't wait for his 'popularity' to pop. "

The media are giving him a free ride (except for a couple of LA Times columnists) and the public thinks he's great. Like so many 'pukes, it's going to be a while before the public catches on. By the time the bad effects of his budgetary and tax policies are fully apparent, he may be long gone from the govship.

Waiting for CA to fall into the sea any day now....

When we got on the subject of the Governor, she became upset and said that Arnold is doing a good job as he got CA a budget because he called the Dems "girlymen" or some such nonsense. She seemed more angry with those who were angry with being called the names! (???)

Every once in a while I ask her if she's received the refund from the lawsuit the Davis was pursuing against the energy companies that ripped her off before Arnold became governor. That usually ends the conversation...

We don't talk much...

24. I hate Arnold and here is why
I have been employed by the state of California for 30 years. I'm getting close to retirement and he wants to fuck with my pension. But that isn't why I hate the asshole.

I hate him because he has no respect whatsoever for state employees. I would be the first to admit that we have a poor reputation that is , by in large, created by a minority of lazy people. I hate him because he referred to State employees (and teachers) in todays Sacramento Bee as the 'Monster who must be starved' and the private sector as the group that must be fed. I have a highly technical IT job. I could have always gone to the private sector, where the money was better and the security worse. I chose to stay, because I knew that I would receive a retirement that I could live on. He is trying hard to destroy Calpers because it has power over the corporations that donate to his coffers. I hate that he has been so effective in turning the general public against the state employees. I hate that he wants to continue to hire more state employees at the same time he is insulting us and sabotaging our pensions. I hate that I'm now considered a 'special interest group'. All of the people he has chosen to screw are refereed to by his spin doctors as special interest groups. Teachers and nurse are special interest groups. Any member of organized labor is special interest groups. This is all sort of Orwellian doublespeak. The democratic legislature won't work with him in a bipartisan manner, according to him. This means it is his way, or he will call for a special election and place propositions the ballot of a special election that will circumvent the democratic process. He is such a fascist piece of shit.

A teacher friend of mine who lives in Menlo Park keeps telling me CA's education system is falling apart...now fourth from the bottom in education funding per capita out of all the states. So these really good schools that CA has been so well-known are going to start falling apart.

that is what is so scary. people seem to buy his bullshit lock, stock, and barrel. He has some pretty polished spin doctors, he has the government controlled media behind him, and he has well trained handlers. He is a political machine and, like government at the federal level, democracy is dead. He is a 'corporate fascist' and very proud of that fact. As long as he doesn't raise taxes, he has the sheeple behind him. Never mind that a 1300 square foot house in Ca. costs a half a million bucks and he is increasing the size of state government as he ridicules the state workforce. Never mind that the schools are falling apart and he is screwing the schools out of money he promised them last year. He is a liar and a fascist. I think there is a reason he was once quoted as admiring Hitler. That is his idol.

34. 'As long as he doesn't raise taxes' : this is the answer and the
one Bush uses so well.

So roads, infrastructure, schools, etc., fall apart, but everyone's happy as the taxes are low. Boggles my mind. I am amazed at how low property taxes are in CA compared to my state. 80% of my property taxes go to the schools. I was comparing property taxes with my friend in Menlo Park and her property tax was about 1/5 of mine although her house value was twice as much as mine.

51. property taxes...
How long ago did your friend buy his house. Property taxes are based on the assessed value of the home at the time of purchase. If he bought it long ago and hasn't done anything to it to trigger a reassessment, then his taxes are low. Mine are low, as I have lived in the same house for 24 years.

My property taxes are only about $1500 a year. If I were to sell this house and buy the house next door, (comparable house), my taxes would then be about $5500 a year.

Arnold can't raise any tax because that would deeply erode his fan base. He can only pick on what he calls 'special interests' like kids (education), teachers (education) elderly, poor and disabled (welfare and medi-cal), state employees, nurses, etc. No closing tax loopholes that benefit the wealthy or corporations, no across the board cuts or taxes of any kind, after all, it was somehow the 'special interest groups' that caused the state to go bankrupt, it wasn't the energy swindle and the dot.com implosion. It was the fact that state employees belong to too powerful and successful of a pension program. It doesn't help that the state owes the pension program a few billion dollars.

Arnold is a fucking pig.

55. They bought it about 30 years ago, a ranch. About 10 years ago
they added a complete snazzy second floor with arch windows, volume ceilings, etc. They say they can get about a million or so and they paid 130000 for it 30 years ago. It is smaller than my house

What also amazes me with the dotcom bust the property still skyrockets in CA. They have a 30 yr old daughter they want to move out ofstate as she will NEVER be able to afford a house in the area on her own. She's a college grad and works at some environmental group that she gets great pleasure doing but the money will never be there for a house. SO they want ther to move someplace where housing is cheaper (like anywhere else but CA).

I pay 9000 property tax a year on a 400,000 house, have no kids. I love watching that go down the drain every year; I can't tell you. How do people pay the teachers in your state; I don't get it. A teacher there has to be paid about the same here, right?

WHren I was in LA last I got a kick out of the LA Times house section. Like $10,000,000 for a 3 bedroom, 2 car garage and OUTDOOR GRILL. Must be some outdoor grill. Like who has this kind of money?

56. It is so insane.
I couldn't even afford to buy my own home. I am stuck here, because if I sold, after taxes and real estate fees, I couldn't afford to buy another home I want to live in. What really sucks is the traffic on the freeways is getting so bad that the freepers are moving out of the burbs and buying small house in established neighborhoods and turning them into McMansions. It is like they are importing the suburbs with these ugly intrusive houses that cover 80% of the lot. My next door neighbor did that and he is quite possibly the only repub on the block.

My cousin sold he home in the bay area for about a half a million and bought a larger home in Ga. for $165,000.

and they may come back to live in the Chicago area (where they are from and their families still live here) and take the money they made on the house and buy a way bigger house in the Chicago area and still have money left over. They say the same thing...they could not afford to buy their own house.

Well, you gotta say one thing, when you sell you have made a lot of money and can move elsewhere and live well. Most people in the country don't have anywhere near the runup in prices as CA other than Manhattan and a few other places.
