Mysterious Object Seen Over East Texas

This weekend, we got calls into the newsroom from viewers saying they saw something that looked like a comet shooting though the sky. It turns out they weren't just seeing things. We were able to catch it on video.

Just after 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening, KLTV 7 photographer Jason Hewes captured a comet-like object that appeared for a few seconds, then just went away. We took the video to Tyler Aviation Training, where it attracted a crowd.

2. Kneejerk Occam's Razor Explanation

Probably a contrail (or chemtrail? ;)), or a meteorite. The Marfa lights are clear on the other side of the state.

5. Crawford Is West of Waco

And at least 150 to 200 miles away from the Tyler/East Texas area where that was sighted.

The Princess and I have been in Hillsboro (between Waco and Dallas) since Thursday, and we didn't see anything unusual. Even when we went to Crawford - the only unusual thing we saw there was people who think Pretzelboy is hot shit.

6. That is WEIRD.

I've seen falling debris and meteors and they streak across the sky much faster than that. It's not a contrail because those stick around for a lot longer and would continue to follow the aircraft. I have no idea what it is, though. Maybe some aliens are planning to save our planet by abducting * or something.

8. Had some colorful sun dogs over Montana today

I saw some good sun dogs and other atmospheric phenomena over Bozeman, MT this afternoon. This looks like an atmospheric reflection/refraction. This is the time of year they show up the best. A sun dog was probably peeking through some clouds in the way (light does strange things). It could indicate an impending change in weather.

Sundogs appear in a 22° angle to the sun. They only move with the movement of the sun. There's no way this could be related to atmospheric phenomena like halos or sundogs.

14. I know what it is, I've seen it before.

My guess is that if you were to hop in a chopper and fly 10-30 miles east of where this was filmed, you'd find a large shiny building or object. I would also bet money that under similar weather conditions exactly one year from the date of filming, they'd see it again.

The "object" is actually light reflected off of a large shiny surface (like a mirrored glass office tower, a solar array, or even an exceptionally still lake or sea) that could have been up to 50 miles from the viewers if the air was still enough. You can simulate the effect yourself by placing a mirror on the ground on a sunny day...by angling the mirror you can send a beam of light into a dark area, and the beam will appear to "move" as the sun moves across the sky.

This video simply shows a larger scale example of the same phenomena. The "comet" was either the focus point of the beam, or simply a spot where it passed through a cloud or contrail and became visible.
