Iran prepared to defend interests if US attacks

Iran's President Mohammad Khatami has said his country is fully prepared to defend its interests if attacked by the United States.

"If any country tries to invade our country, we are strong enough to defend ourselves," Mr Khatami said while on a visit to Uganda.

"No one will benefit from an attack on our country, including the United States or others."

The warning comes after US President George W Bush refused to rule out the option of military strikes on Iran and US Vice President Dick Cheney identified Iran as being at the top of the administration's list of world trouble spots.

But even though I think the mullahs have their collective heads up their butts, I think Khatami is more or less right. Unlike all the half-ass countries we have attacked so far (Afganistan, Iraq), Iran is a real nation. They are not like most of the Middle Eastern "tribes with flags" bunch.

Persia is an ancient country and has suffered through any number of lousy leaders in the last 2500 years. But the people have a real love of their country and land. And it is not a big flat desert. Most of Iran is high (4000'+) plateau with some serious mountains.

I do not like to wish people ill, but if BushCo takes our military there, we will be in deep s***.
