Swazi opposition leader detained
Mbabane - The main opposition leader from Swaziland, Africa's last remaining absolute monarchy, was detained along with two other members of his party at the African Union summit in Mozambique after they protested for more freedoms in their tiny country.

Mario Masuku, who heads the People's United Democratic Movement (Pudemo), had travelled to Maputo to mount a symbolic protest on the sidelines of the AU summit to call for democratic reforms in Swaziland.

Masuku accused the Swazi authorities of having aroused the concern of the Mozambican government by leading them to believe that the Pudemo activists could carry out extremist attacks in Maputo, where African leaders met from Thursday to Saturday at the AU's second summit.

"We were arrested in Mozambique and spent a night at the Matola Army Camp where we were questioned about our mission to that country," Masuku said, referring to himself and two Pudemo colleagues also detained.

"After explaining to them, they then gave us a nice place where we slept before we were handed over to the Swazi police who detained us for close to an hour and later released us."
