Colo. Mortuary Apologizes Over Fetuses

7 minutes ago U.S. National - AP

LOUISVILLE, Colo. - A mortuary that secretly gave a Roman Catholic church fetal remains from an abortion clinic and other medical sources has apologized to a hospital unaware of the practice.

Crist Mortuary in Boulder sent the apology this week to Avista Adventist Hospital in nearby Leadville.

"It was pretty clear to me that they had no intention of deceiving us," hospital CEO John Sackett said. The mortuary did not return phone messages seeking comment.

Crist had sent fetal ashes to Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Boulder for almost a decade. The church had privately scattered the ashes at a memorial wall but decided to publicize the ceremony the day after the 32nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade (news - web sites), the U.S. Supreme Court (news - web sites) decision that legalized abortion.

1. Superficial apologies
Sending fetal ashes to the RCC for a effing DECADE? That was a political statement knowing the RCC was firmly against abortion.

2. This is bizarre.
I haven't thought this through, and maybe it is just too far-fetched, but, if, according to the Catholic Church and the mortuary, the fetuses are actually babies (and maybe even if they aren't), then, their remains belonged to the hospital or, possibly, the parents. I might be wrong, but it seems to me, that the mortuary had no legal right to give the remains to anyone -- anymore than they could give the remains of a deceased adult to someone other than the family.

Could the mortuary be subject to legal action either by the hospital or a "parent" of one of the fetuses. I don't know of any precedent on this, but there's always a first time.

8. Colorado law officially considers them medical waste so....
I think unless the hospital had a written contract that addressed it, there probably isn't any grounds for a lawsuit.

The pain this gives to the women who had to make a wrenching decision--possibly many due to irreversible and severe fetal defects-- is just horrible. The church showed its "true colors" in doing this for political gain.

5. radioactive waste and heavy metal pollution likely caused birth defects

Leadville, Colorado is an environmental disaster....a small town in the high Colorado Rocky Mountains built entirely on top of mining waste (tailings piles and dredge are EVERYWHERE with houses built in between the giant piles of mining waste)...

named "Leadville" because it was originally a small mining town for LEAD....however, and very unfortunately, when you BLOW OPEN A MOUNTAIN, the explosions create SULFURIC ACID, which leach out all kinds of toxic metals, some of which are radioactive....

in Leadville, there are toxic heavy metals BLOWING in the wind everyday, contaminating the drinking water, and seeping radiation into the buildings....

BIG CORPORATIONS made FORTUNES extracting these metals...and NOW, they make fortunes selling this polluted land to unsuspecting newcomers who enjoy the mountain views....

the result of this greed: women have deformed fetuses, which they smartly abort or miscarry...

6. Thanks for the view of Leadville's past.
Almost all of us visitors have had NO IDEA anything like this has happened there.

Horrible, just horrible. It's not at all widely known outside the area.

9. i wonder if this is the same church
years ago, back when O.J. Simpson was still a hot topic, he had to auction off some memorabilia to pay the Goldmans after the civil trial...Some big church in Colorado bought about $50,000 in memorabilia just to have a public burning of it (obviously the money could have been better spent on the poor or hungry, and if they had such hatred for simpson and wanted to make a point, why even hand over $$$$ to him??)
