Gingrich offers God-themed walking tour of Washington D.C.
http://www.knoxstudio.com/shns/story.cfm?pk=TOUROFGOD-02-01-05&cat=WW

<snip>

In his new book, Gingrich has outlined "A Walking Tour of God in Washington." It includes such religious images as a Bible in the hand of a Pilgrim in a painting in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda and a statue of Moses in the Library of Congress.

<snip>

Herb Howell, 46, a fire-alarm technician from St. Louis, steadied his camera as his wife, Kathryn, 46, stepped gingerly through snow in front of the Washington Monument. They were taking last-minute snapshots before ending four days of sightseeing.

Kathryn, a software analyst, said a tour focusing on the religious aspects of Washington would give tourists a better grasp of history.

"Our nation was founded on a belief in God," she said. "You can't divorce religion and government. We start to lose touch with who we are and where we've come from."

38. Maybe. The Religious Right has been rewriting Jeffersonian history
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 09:06 PM by brentspeak
for the past twenty years or so. Some Religious Right character, David Barton of Wallbuilders, has been at the forefront of this bogus history-writing. Fortunately, he was exposed as the charletan that he is when a "America is a christian nation"-type quote he attributed to James Madison turned out to be as phony as James Madison $1000 bill.

This Barton guy won't give it up, however; recently, he's been making the claim that the Jefferson Bible was developed by Jefferson so as to make it easier to spread the Gospel to non-English-speaking foreigners.

46. He's going to have a hard time explaining away Jefferson's views on
Unitarianism. He was a very good friend with Joseph Priestly, a scientist and minister who helped to spread Unitarianism in America. I led a service at a UU fellowship about Jefferson's religious views and compiled a very long list of quotes from his letters and writings that leave no doubt that he was certainly not a Christian in the way the religious right defines the word. Were he around today, he'd be at the target of a right-wing smear campaign.

Here's a good rebuttal to the revisionist claims you cite:

14. Weren't these people taught about separation of church and state?
Kathryn, you need to get a better grasp.

The United States always kept religion separate from the state. It's what made us peaceful and prosperous compared with other parts of the world. The Declaration of Independence stated that people's rights come directly from God so they can't be taken away by any government, and what Jefferson meant by that is that governments don't derive their powers from divinity, only from the governed.

Where does the press find these people? Oh, and while they were at it, why didn't they ask her if she thinks the First Amendment goes too far?

And as far as God goes ..... Gingrich will get God's justice in God's own time--not ours.

31. Mama, mama, pin a rose on me!
Of course there's a god. I know everything about how the universe works!

I love god; you must love me. God is nothing but good; only a fool would argue that. Since god's good, if I love him, I'm good too! I'm good! I'm better than other people! People who disagree with me don't deserve to exist. Godgodgod! Love me! I need it! Hate those who don't believe, or the Sky Chief will never let you in for the eternal head-patting.

I hope Newt really pushes for his egotistical comeback. He's one of the meanest and most selfish people to have ever risen to prominence in this country, and that's a hell of a statement. He has so much personal baggage that he needs a platoon of skycaps just to keep it tidy.

I forwarded the article link to my religious right relatives, with a rather choice accompanying opinion.

On edit:
It ticked me off so much I set up a monthly donation to Americans United for Separation of Church and State. Rev. Barry Lynn is quoted at the end of the article. I'm already a member, but I'm very concerned about this nonsense. We progressives have to make AU strong.

I posted earlier about how Dobson, a very vocal leader in the Radical Religous Right, boasted about those fighting for reproductive rights have given up (referring to Feldt resigning as President of Planned Parenthood). Of course, I hope he believes that - that way he won't see us moving forward - until its too late.

36. The Painting in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda has no blacks and
does not depict slavery.

No blacks, no slavery No Douglass, No Tubman.

All the frescos are of whites.

The only Native Americans shown are in acts of violence.

Atop of the Capitol Dome stands the "Statue of Freedom".

Designed by Thomas Crawford for $3000 in Rome Italy.

It was cast at a foundry owned by Clark Mills for $23,736
in 1863

Phillip Reed, a slave owned by Reed was given the responsiblity of
casting the statue of liberty.

Reed and other slaves hoisted the 10,000 pound statue (in
five separate sections atop the theos.

Any you won't find any of this information in the Capitol literature.

My source is: "The Debt: What America Owes Blacks" by Randall Robinson, pp. 1 - 5.
