Wolfowitz Says No Nationalist Insurgency in Iraq
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 01:11 PM by leftchick
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20050203/ts_nm/iraq_usa_dc&cid=564&ncid=1480

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Iraq (news - web sites)'s elections showed that U.S.-led forces are not fighting a nationalist insurgency but an "unholy alliance of old terrorists and new terrorists" trying to destroy Iraq's newly forming government, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz said on Thursday.

Buoyed by the turnout and less violence than expected in Iraq's elections on Sunday, Wolfowitz said it showed that a two-year process to establish a new Iraqi government "despite setbacks and tragedies, is still on track," rebutting statements from some Democrats that it has become a quagmire.

With the first round of elections completed, Wolfowitz told the Senate Armed Services Committee (news - web sites) U.S. forces could be drawn down to 135,000, down by 15,000. The Pentagon (news - web sites) delayed the scheduled departure of thousands of U.S. troops in order to inflate the American force level to 150,000 to help provide security ahead of the election.

<snip>

Wolfowitz said the big turnout in Iraq's elections showed the violence "is not a nationalist insurgency. It is an unholy alliance of old terrorists and new terrorists" of remnants of deposed President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s regime and "new terrorists drawn from across the region."

... why does this lying piece of shit still have a job?

I have to edit to add:

car bombings in Mosul and Baghdad Today

a convoy of 50 IP attacked and 36 abducted in Baghdad

12 IP pulled off a bus in Kirkuk and slaughtered,2 apparent IP infiltrators get away with the "NON-nationalist" insurgents

A convoy of contractors guarded by US military is attacked and several vehicles destroyed on the Baghdad Airport road

..... I guess this means things are better and there are only a few "foreign fighters' wreaking havoc all over Iraq today???

3. Paul "wildly off the mark" Wolfowitz
http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/issues/iraq/attack/consequences/2003/0228pentagoncontra.htm

<snip>

Mr. Wolfowitz, the deputy defense secretary, opened a two-front war of words on Capitol Hill, calling the recent estimate by Gen. Eric K. Shinseki of the Army that several hundred thousand troops would be needed in postwar Iraq, "wildly off the mark." Pentagon officials have put the figure closer to 100,000 troops. Mr. Wolfowitz then dismissed articles in several newspapers this week asserting that Pentagon budget specialists put the cost of war and reconstruction at $60 billion to $95 billion in this fiscal year. He said it was impossible to predict accurately a war's duration, its destruction and the extent of rebuilding afterward.

* And I believe the founders of our country were considered terrorists themselves, by the British...

The government of the United Kingdom, which has now designated the LTTE as terrorists, had also smeared George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Francis Marion, with the same brush. In fact, back in 1776, all fifty-six leaders of the American Revolution were branded, and Britain wanted them ‘dead or alive.’ Their crime: they signed the American Declaration of Independence.

The Boston Tea Party was a political protest by Boston, Massachusetts residents against the British parliament. It is one of the key national myths of the founding of the United States and a key point in the American revolution. According to the FBI, the incident was a terrorist act.

the concept that the "liberation" promised by Bush is done by a different Bush than the one who left them high and dry in 1991?

I doubt that they care. All that they probably realize is that twice, Bush has killed thousands of innocent Iraqis in the quest to kill suicide bombers . . . or so Bush43 says . . .

10. If they know who they are, why can't they find them?
They don't know dick. I'll give you a hint: it's probably (e) all of the above. Whether you want to call them "nationalists" or not, many just want the fucking invader out of their country. There are obviously religious nuts at work too, since secularists and freedom fighters don't tend to blow themselves up on purpose. There are groups vying for power and probably ad-hoc alliances going on between those who don't much care for each other.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they found virtually no foreign fighters in Fallujah, right?

12. Because if it were a nationalist insurgency, it would be OK?
Sure. Anything can be done in the name of nationalism. Car bombs, you name it. We prove that every day!

Also, I love how 9 car bombs and 22 dead is "less violence than expected," as opposed to "way more violence than is acceptable."

Sigh,

21. when are they going to realize only a very stupid enemy throws
verything they got against you when they know you are fully alerted and reinforced and waiting for them!! Come on!! I mean I was surprised that 9 bombs got off.

We telegraphed extraordinarily well that we'll kill anything suspicious that moves or breathes during the run up to the elections and election day. What kind of comander who is outgunned technologically and with actual depth of fire power, decides "hey! fuck it! Im a crazy wild eyed jihadist Ill attack them when it'll probably do the least tohelp my cause!"...

The Sistani slate is already arguing with Allawis. The Sunni did exactly what we thought they would. Turkey is handing out warnings to Kirkuk Kurds like a card dealer on acid....

Full blown civil warfare is really only a few shots away.

that "a few" terrorists and insurgents...

Well those few have manged to kill over 1400 American soldiers and send more than 10,000 more home to not fight again.

But it is just a few bad seeds...need I mention I don't notice a downward trend in casualties.

25. State Propoganda...?
State Propoganda bordering on brain-washing...

Is there anyone left that can't accept the reasonable conclusion that a foreign, white, Christian expanionist state that has killed easily a 100,000, flattened a city, has interned and tortured thousands wouldn't cause a 'nationalist' backlash and insurrection?

Given the history of the US in the region, it's surrogates and it's unapologetic attempt to place a favourable client in Iraq, what possible logic would there be to appraising the situation as 'merely' America haters with no real 'agenda'?

Obviously Wolf's comments are for domestic consumption (brainwashing) and is simply stating patriotic 'talking points' for the rest of Media to follow under pain of 'treason'...

The guy, like the rest, just don't make a lot of sense...

(BTW who won this 'successful' election anyhow?...probably the only election in the world, where the results are less important than the 'process' itself)

will be just as deadly. What a fool you are Wolfie!

I can't believe that after all his lies and misjudgments, any committee would still invite his testimony about anything, much less Iraq.

I wonder if he's aware of the election in Vietnam in 1967 when apparently 83% came out to vote and supposedly were not deterred by those 'terrorists.' Those same terrorists that were fighting a war of national liberation.

Can't these guys show a little creativity and come up with a new story line?
