Rice's Won't Be at Mideast Summit {sic}

WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be in Jerusalem and the West Bank early next week. So why not add a visit to the Egyptian resort hosting a Mideast summit?

"You don't have to be at every gathering at the highest level to be a player and to be a part of the solution," Adam Ereli, the State Department's deputy spokesman, said Friday.

Rice is scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas while in the Middle East. A day after she concludes her talks, the summit opens in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik, but Rice will be returning to Europe.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Jordanian King Abdullah II will try to push the peace process forward in the session with Sharon and Abbas.
