Siptroth wins special election for 189th District state House seat
Edited on Wed Feb-09-05 10:40 AM by rabid_nerd

A Smithfield Township supervisor defeated a business owner by 209 votes in a special election Tuesday to fill the vacant 189th District state House seat.

According to unofficial results, Democrat John J. Siptroth received 3,452 votes, or 51 percent, and Republican Diane L. Hannan got 3,243 votes, or 48 percent.

About 6,695 votes were tabulated in the district, which includes parts of Monroe and Pike counties.

The seat became vacant when Kelly Lewis resigned Dec. 6 to head the nonprofit Technology Council of Central Pennsylvania.

Poster's Notes:
This is an upset pickup of a formerly Republican state house seat in Pennsylvania.

Had posted about it here but noone noticed:

1. As a non-Pennsylvanian, these are my suspicions re redistricting...
I suspect that the PA GOP overextended themselves with their last redistricting on both congressional and legislative levels. California Democrats did this in the 1980 redistricting and later in the decade paid a price for it because they incorrectly projected political shifts at the local level.

Do you think that it is entirely feasible for the Democrats to seize both legislative houses soon? I know the gap has been narrowed. PA is not basically a GOP state. Santorum is not in line with the mainstream, though the other senator is...

3. The Other Senator Would Be Arlen Specter
and yes, he is VERY in-line with PA...he is a very moderate Republican...what they might even call a RINO.

I voted for him twice, when I lived in Pennsylvania.

My only Republican experience. But the man EARNED my vote.
