Bush calls for end of racism
CNN
Wednesday, February 9, 2005 Posted: 9:54 AM EST (1454 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush, whose relationship with black lawmakers has been strained over the last four years, told black leaders Tuesday that the United States can not carry freedom abroad while holding "the baggage of bigotry" at home.

Bush welcomed black leaders to the East Room of the White House to celebrate black history month.

"Success of freedom on the home front is critical to its success in foreign lands," Bush said. "As I said in my inaugural address, we cannot carry the message of freedom and the baggage of bigotry at the same time."

Bush noted legislation he signed in 2003 to create the National Museum of African American History and Culture within the Smithsonian Institution. The president and his wife, Laura, made a contribution, for an undisclosed amount, to construction of the museum.

38. I honestly don't think I can take much more
This world around me has reached such gargantuan proportions of surreality and downright unbelievability, that I sometimes think (more and more frequently) that I am reaching the limit of my ability to cope.

In addition to all the points already made, this is perhaps the height of what I've seen of his hubris. "I'll just declare that there should be an end to it. I am SO powerful, that that will make a difference." Either that or it's his most cynical hypocrisy yet. Or what the hell, perhaps both.

Stop the World, I Wanna Get Off!

40. And expansion of heterosexism
This Black gay man calls bullshit. Should I be happy he only wants half of me to be a second class citizen? This is disgusting. Bush is a bigot, he advocates writing bigotry into the Constitution, and hollow blather about racism does not change that fact. This is just the same divide and conquer as always. I will not be divided or conquered, and most Black people will not be fooled. The problem is they don't need most, only enough to put them over the top.

43. Oh well this explains it
in my local rightwing rag yesterday, the editorial was titled, "Democrats no longer champion racial equality" and went on to tout Republicans as the new champions of racial equality, based on their support of Rice and Gonzalez, and the Dems opposition to them. So, apparently like a good little Bush-bot, when Rove said, "jump," this editor said, "how high?" I wonder how many other editors ran the same sort of garbage yesterday, right on cue with Shrub's announcement today.

48. He should know.
Twice in the past year, once in last spring's press conference, ** has made statements like this:

Some of the debate really center (sic) around the fact that people don't believe Iraq can be free; that if you're Muslim, or perhaps brown-skinned, you can't be self-governing and free. I strongly disagree with that. I reject that, because I believe that freedom is the deepest need of every human soul, and, if given a chance, the Iraqi people will be not only self-governing, but a stable and free society.

Have you ever heard anyone else say that?

Just what "people" is he talking about?

Look at what the man is saying. For all intents and purposes, he's saying that he has personal knowledge that "people" hold the opinion that "if you're Muslim, or perhaps brown-skinned, you can't be self-governing and free."

I can't imagine even an admitted racist saying a thing like that, if only for the sake of political correctness.

Yet here we have the occupant of the White House saying this is how "people" feel, then oh-so-nobly distancing himself and disagreeing with it.

How, exactly, does he know that "people" feel this way?

I could be wrong, but it's my experience that when someone talks so broadly about what "people" believe, they're really talking about what they themselves believe.

(The link to the quote is here: whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/04/20040413-20.html

Cut & paste into the browser & type the TripleDubya in front of it. I'm not putting it in as a link, because I wouldn't put it past them to suddenly alter the transcript of the press conference if they started getting hits from DU. Do a CTRL-F on the word "brown.")

I bash him as good as anyone at DU. But, in the main, I think he has pulled his party in the right direction when it comes to racial progress. He hasn't hit a home run, but he's close to a sliding double. Maybe it's just playing an ethnic politics numbers game, but he has really neutralized the Mexican haters in the GOP. No mean feat, that.

perhaps he is referring to the "raceless racism" of the Soviet-style that the Busheviks are pushing in which we will ALL be th "Uppity negroes" to the Bushevik KKK.

Coming just as soon as the last generations who spent a significant protion of their (our) lives in Old Free America grow old and die, just as the First Phase of Totalitarianism came, not coincidentally, as the last people to fight and defeat Hitler grew old and died.
