Victims calls for seizure of Pinochet's assets

www.chinaview.cn 2005-02-15 10:19:27

SANTIAGO, Feb. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- A lawyer representing victims of an operation carried out by former dictator Augusto Pinochet asked the Chilean government on Monday to seize 7 million US dollars worth of Pinochet's property to pay civil damages.

Hector Salazar, who represents the relatives of four victims in the Operation Condor case, made the request to Judge Juan Guzman Tapia, who in January had Pinochet arrested on charges of kidnapping and murder.

Pinochet has been indicted of masterminding the kidnapping and murder of at least nine people during his rule.

"We have requested Judge Guzman to seize the property of General Pinochet in order to ensure that he is held liable for civil damages in these crimes," said Salazar.

1. Ouch!
Gee, I wonder how a humble civil servant like Pinochet amassed personal property worth in excess of $7 million? This would be one of the unkinder things that could happen to Augusto: To lose the accumulated graft of a lifetime of corruption and just plain evil, so that he can't pass it to his heirs.

2. brilliant idea...
Hey...it's 7 million he illegally garnered through dictatorship...take it all away! Give it to the people who suffered under him...and give the rest to the Chilean treasury.
