Lawyer calls for 74,000 years in jail

Associated Press in Madrid
Tuesday February 15, 2005
The Guardian

A Spanish prosecutor, Pedro Rubira, wants three al-Qaida suspects accused of using Spain as a staging post for the 9/11 attacks on the US sent to jail for more than 74,000 years - 25 years for each of the 2,973 officially listed as killed in the World Trade Centre and Pentagon attacks.

Spanish law restricts the jail term for a terrorist offence to 40 years, however: there is no death penalty and no full-life term.

Imad Yarkas, alleged leader of an al-Qaida cell, Driss Chebli and Ghasoub al-Abrash Ghalyoun are due to go on trial next month. Mr Chebli is Moroccan, the other two of Syrian origin.

Another 21 are charged with belonging to a terrorist organisation, out of 40 indicted in September 2003 and subsequently by the investigative magistrate Baltasar Garzón.

1. can't say I disagree...
they are complicit in the deaths of those thousands of people..and justice must be served.

But...how come the same logic doesn't apply to the Bush war criminals? They should be sent to jail, not for 74,000, but for 1,000,000!

2. Let's punish them more harshly
I say let's call for a hundred thousand hillion skillion jillion years. Anything less, like 74,000 years, is just a slap on the wrist.

3. Hey, in Spain, I think with a 74 Thousand Year Sentence.....
You're eligible for parole in only 30 Thousand years..........

4. I don't know about
Spain but here prosecutors in states where you can't put someone away without giving them a chance of parole use that trick to get around it.
