Universal health care on ballot in 19 towns (VT)
Vermonters from 19 towns and cities as diverse as Springfield, Montpelier, Middletown Springs and Burlington will vote at town meeting whether the state should work toward a comprehensive and universal health care system.

Spearheaded by the Brattleboro organization, Vermont Citizens Campaign for Health, and aided by a big push from former state Sen. Cheryl Rivers, D-Windsor, who is acting as a consultant, the group hopes to expand on 2004 town meeting when many towns in Windham County adopted the resolution.

In Brattleboro last year, 87 percent of those voting approved the resolution, according to Richard Davis, executive director of Vermont Citizens Campaign for Health.

“In many of the towns, it’s a real sign of change,” Rivers said.
Some towns, such as Burlington and Montpelier, will vote on it as a ballot item, while other towns will debate it on the floor at town meeting, she said.
