Schwarzenegger raps steroid use, but the Arnold Classic remains a showcase for drug-enhanced 'freak' physiques

Edward Epstein, Chronicle Washington Bureau
Sunday, February 20, 2005

When federal drug agents swept in to subpoena current and past competitors at the annual pro bodybuilding competition staged by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, it was a sharp reminder of the pervasive connection between the sport and steroids.

Despite Schwarzenegger's repeated pronouncements that steroids are harmful and should be banned from the sport, there is widespread use of steroids, human growth hormones and other illegal performance-enhancing drugs among competitors at the contest that bears his name.

As he has since he and a partner created the Arnold Classic in 1989, Schwarzenegger -- seven-time winner of bodybuilding's top prize, the Mr. Olympia contest -- plans to attend when the winner is crowned and receives the $100,000 prize on March 5 in Columbus, Ohio.

1. Arnold's pronouncements are insincere at best
And preening hypocrisy at worst.

Were it not for anabolics, Ahnuld would be a nobody.

Do you think any body builder will take his anti-steroid pronouncements seriously?

13. It stretches credulity, to say there were no steroids involved in that.
You would have to be extremely gullible to believe that physique could be created naturally. He should have been a race horse.

6. Let's Face It ...
... if it wasn't for steroids Arnie would have spent his life hanging around Austria handing out bath towels at spas somewhere in the Alps.

Bullshit actor, bullshit borrow and spend gutless GOP governor.

7. Didn't Arnold have a heart attack in the early 90s?
The MSM doesn't ever mention this, except here.

Steroid use in one's youth leads to heart attacks in later years.

Arnold says he used steroids when they were legal.

From the posted article:

Steroid complications
The list of pro bodybuilders who have suffered serious health problems or died over the past decade is long and growing. But an exact count isn't possible because not all those with illnesses say their problems are related to drug abuse. All of the following men competed in the Arnold Classic, the pro invitational contest held annually in Columbus, Ohio, under the patronage of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The governor himself underwent heart surgery at age 49, but has steadfastly denied that it was related to steroid use.

12. it was more likely the result of rapid weight gain...
the AAS being the cause of that weight gain... so the AAS use is secondary to the primary cause of the heart issues.

find me a scientific medical study that blames AAS use for heart issues.

11. dont bash AAS users....
at the end of the day, the government has no right to tell *anyone* what they can do to their body. this is no different from the hypocricies inherent in the marijuana/tobacco/alcohol situations.

there are plenty of issues to pick on arnold for. dont let personal freedom to do what you want with your body be one of the issues.
