Anti-gay religious group targets Shrek 2
Edited on Mon Feb-21-05 05:29 PM by truthpusher

Anti-gay religious group targets Shrek 2
Canadian Press

TORONTO — Uh oh! That other jolly green giant could be in trouble. Shrek 2 is the latest animated film title to be "outed'' by Christian fundamentalists in the U.S.

(snip)

"Shrek 2 is billed as harmless entertainment but contains subtle sexual messages,'' says the coalition, which describes itself as a grassroots inter-denominational lobby with more than 43,000 member churches.

(snip)

The article then proceeds to describe one of the characters, an "evil'' bartender (voiced by Larry King) who is a male-to-female transgender in transition and who expresses a sexual desire for Prince Charming.

In another identified scene, Shrek and Donkey need rescuing from a dungeon by Pinocchio and his nose, which is made to extend as an escape bridge by getting the wooden boy to lie about not wearing women's underwear.

134. DOT - Defense of Toons
maybe we need to start an organization to defend toons. I mean, these toons have no legal status whatsoever, they can't vote, they can't marry, many are not allowed to live in certain neighborhoods, they are under total control of corporations - "virtual" slaves, words are put in their mouths, any money they earn goes to their creators...

I'm just waiting for the slogan "Don't hate the toons, hate the toonists...."

these fundies surprise me by proving there's more crazy to be had in Crazy Land than I ever knew.

You know, everytime they do something like this, interest in said cartoon character RISES. My daughter was just about over SpongeBob and when James Dobson had his craziness, my daughter suddenly wanted to watch it again. If the fundies hated it, her logic went, it MUST be uber-cool!

Now she's going to be begging me for the Shrek 2 DVD!!!!

Is there ANY foundation to any of this crap? I know I've watched a little of Sponge Bob and didn't see anything to indicate he was gay! Are these idiots reading things into movies and cartoons that really aren't there?

Any of us could do the same. How about the big KISS Shrub gave to Lieberman? Does that mean we should assume Shrub is also gay?

86. Not really, but, like most good kids' movies
it can be enjoyed by parents as well, so there are some "subtle" jokes that I'm sure I read into in a way my 8 year old did not.

But no - it's not going to turn your kid gay or anything!

(On reflection, however, the overriding message is to love and be loved for who you are, not who society wants you to be. Beauty is on the inside, not the outside, and if you are a troll, be loud and proud about it - so maybe they have a point!)

but the movie played on a lot of old stereotypes. I definitely noticed the "gay" things in the movie, but was very happy to see these people being accepted by their friends/peers/etc. They continued functioning like normal as most people do when they are accepted in their environments.

P.S. I am gay, so I am very sensitive to these things and maybe read into it too much. I am not sure if many others thought about this during the movie.

edit: grammar

I have gay family members, but they have not seen the Shreks. I thought they were hysterical, second one being funnier than the first.

These people are just freaking obsessed.

I can't get it out of my head, after the last election when the phony exit polls showed "moral values" were what drove voters, Jon Stewart is talking to his guest the next night and naming off all the pressing matters we face in America, the war, poverty, loss of civil liberties, and he ends up with:

"And it all comes down to who's kissing who?"

Amen, Jon, Amen.

Him tighting his corset and putting on a wig and false eyelashes was a core tactic in fucking with that wolf's head. Not to mention Elmer Fudd. Someone should go back in time and alert them to all this.

I think cartoons must've been the cause of transgender Native American shaman and warriors. Also the cause of Chinese and Byzantine eunuchism. Greek homosexuality? Look no further than Daffy Duck... the apriori cause of all perversion.

31. ran across this (Amway-funded) 'org' today whilst googling ...
... for the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) today ...

Traditional Values Coalition is just another cog in the Republican Propaganda Machine ...

according to the http://www.mediatransparency.org/fundometer.php, a major contributor to the Traditional Values Coalition, in 2001, was the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation
http://www.mediatransparency.org/funders/devos.html

Richard DeVos is co-founder of Amway Corp. and owner of the Orlando Magic (2004), and served as the finance chairman of the Republican National Committee. He ranks in the Forbes 400 and is, according to Forbes, amoung the world's richest people, with an estimated worth of $1.7 billion in 2003.

When doing the fund-o-meter search using "http://www.traditionalvalues.org" ... interestingly,
4 organizations came up:

Found 4 reciepients:
Boy Scouts of America
Heritage Foundation
Traditional Values Coalition
University of Southern California

clicking 'Traditional Values Coalition' goes to this page:
"http://www.mediatransparency.org/search_results/info_on_any_recipient.php?recipientID=3171, showing 2 major funders

Back to the CBC ... the Traditional Values Coalition page 'hit', is, imo, unbelievable ... this goes on so much and unchecked and uncountered ...

"Congressional Black Caucus Member Attacks African-American Pastors" ... http://www.traditionalvalues.org/modules.php?sid=1949

How to counter this propaganda tool? Do we set up a bunch of tax exempt organizations and put similar stories out, like: White Congressman Questions the King family's integrity??? No, we have integrity, and the Republican/conservative/rightwing/fundamentalists do not ...

Snip from link:

"On September 30th the U.S. House of Representative debated and voted on a constitutional amendment to protect marriage. During the debates, House Majority Leader, Tom DeLay (R-TX), spoke of the African-American Pastors that were in Washington, D.C. to meet with the Congressional Black Caucus.

"He (Delay) said, 'I am going bring up one letter out of hundreds of thousands of letters I have from particular pastors from Dr. Creflo E. Dollar of the World Changers Ministry of College Park, Georgia. I won't read the letter I would like unanimous consent to submit it for the record. But I will quote him: 'This is not a civil rights issue. (This is an African-American pastor from an African-American Church) 'This is not a civil rights issue as many would have you believe and the attempt to frame it as such is an insult to the millions of Americans who have been victims of actual discrimination.'"

"Congressional Black Caucus member, John Lewis (D-GA) jumped up and said, Mr. Lewis of Georgia. "I just want to set the record straight here. Some of these so-called black ministers and so-called civil rights leaders never supported civil rights. They never marched for one day. They never put their bodies on the line for the cause of civil rights. Coretta Scott King, the widow of Martin Luther King, Jr. is opposed to this amendment."

Rev. Lou Sheldon was at the debates that day and said, "I was shocked to hear him say these pastors have no credibility. Only Coretta Scott King and her son have credibility."

The voted failed by getting 227 votes (276 were needed.)

~snip~

There were other members of the CBC there that didn't speak including Rep. Albert Wynn (D-MD). He was all sprawled out in a chair appearing to be asleep during the debates.

~snip~

Want to take action about what you have just read?

~snip~

for more info on Rev. Lou Sheldon, president of the Traditional Values Coalition ... go here ...

cited by Delay ...

Who is Dr. Creflo A. Dollar?

Moderate republicans who still vote the republican ticket are the most important supporters these wacked out nuts have. Without those moderate republican voters the fundamentalists would have very little political power or influence on the national level.

The technical aspects to the animation are truly amazing... the shadowing effects and the detail in body movements are absolutely incredible. And to top it off with such comedy...I still smile thinking about it.

34. You know
They simply hate anything that children enjoy more than bible study. They went out on a limb and attacked pokemon too, but that was considered big business so I guess one took precidence over the other. I remember the fine day I overheard the leaders of my former church discussing pokemon's satanic and pagan roots. 'Pikachu means satan, I heard (such and such) say so!'. I was more than happy to inform him that, to my studies, it was derived out of two japanese words which roughly meant 'thunder mouse' and was off.

These people will speculate anything. They just want something to bitch at and their personal victories are ruining happinesses in children. You think attacking the whole of american children's programming is bad, you should see what the poor kids growing up with these people go through. I had to convince one of my cousins that he wasn't going to hell for playing a game of super mario with me...

But since the character is readily apparent as a transvestite, the religious wrong isn't interested. TV tome erroneously lists this character having a male voice as a "goof" on the part of the dubbing http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/GuidePageServlet/showid-467/epid-25337/
The author of this TV tome article is forgetting that LGBT characters are common in anime and manga in Japan (the Japanese are way more progressive and tolerant than the American mainstream, in allowing people of different gender and sexual orientations in children's programming and comics).

Androgynous--and sometimes gay--pretty boys called Bishonen are ubiquitous in manga aimed toward a young female audience in Japan:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishonen

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaoi

I think they only care about a character only possibly being gay; they seem to derive a secret and cheap thrill from clandestine relationships, or imagined innuendo, as in the case of Spongebob: He and Patrick hold hands, I wonder what that means? Hmmmmm?!

There are several openly gay characters in the anime Sailor Moon:

http://www.lizzard.net/SuperS/debate/027.html

The male character of Zoicite was dubbed with a female voice in the American airing, to avoid a controversy.

Zoicite:

Zoicite with boyfriend:

Lesbian couple Neptune and Uranus from Sailor Moon:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailor_Uranus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailor_Uranus

This demonstrates how little the religious wrongers are aware of in the world (changing attitudes, pop culture, etc.), outside of their delusional one.

I remember seeing somewhere that they were using Joan Rivers for the barkeep in the UK release.

Didn't say why, not that I recall.

the Warner cartoons of the 30s and 40s, with racist depictions of blacks, asians, native americans, etc. Oh wait, Bugs Bunny liked to cross dress and kiss men, so no, I guess they wouldn't like those either.

These people are absolutely insane.

gay-hunting is the modern-day witch-hunting. And yes, they are still hunting witches.

on edit: We have to keep associating these people with REPUBLICANS. Don't say they are a fringe (like I did above). Make sure people connect these folks with their next-door-neighbor hardcore repukes the way the right tries to associate every fringe leftist group as being part of the mainstream of the Democratic party.

is that it's basically a love story where the female is a ogress, and she stays an ogress rather than being transformed into a generic beauty.
Fundies are at least as brainwashed as the rest of our culture into thinking every romantic heroine or sex object has to fit a certain template.

For myself, I thought this was a delightful touch. It shows excellent values; with a theme that love is a matter of the heart, not appearances.

As for my little granddaughter, she just thinks it's a great movie.

IMAGINE HOW WONDERFUL IT WOULD BE IF THESE MOTHERFUCKERS COULD CHANNEL ALL THIS ENERGY INTO SOMETHING POSITIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How in the hell can you live your life looking for the BAD in every little fucking thing in this world, while never noticing the good things?????????????????????????????????????

It's the same with the anti choice folks. They can bitch about abortion, or they can go to the local hospital in a big city and rock those poor babies who come into this world inadvertently addicted to crack and have to go through withdrawal. Wouldn't the world be a better place with a POSITIVE solution rather than attempts to control another person's behavior.

Thank you very much for allowing my vent.

96. That takes too much effort.
They want to feel more righteous than their neighbor wihtout actually having to expend any energy to actually be a better human being. It relates to one of Jesus's examples of a Pharisee and a Publican. The Pharisee barfed up this self-sanctimonious prayer "Lord, I thank you that I'm not like this Publican over here etc." while the Publican beat his breast and prayed "Lord, have mercy on me a sinner." Jesus asked his audience which one went away forgiven.

The Talibangelists are simply modern legalistic Pharisees. It's a pitiful existence, if you ask me. They're all about control and power, not about bringing people closer to God or making them into better human beings. Yet another aspect of right-wing hypocrisy that drove me leftward. Going around with a chip on my shoulder and a pinecone up my ass wasn't making me a better human being. :D

131. Hey!!!!
I resemble that remark....

I do like toons, I actually think that they're more edifying than some of what passes for entertainment these days, like *Survivor* and *Fear Factor* and all the reality show crap (WTF do people see in 'Survivor'?). I'd rather watch Bugs in drag vamp Elmer, it's funnier. Or watch a ten foot hairy orange monster named 'Gossamer' freak out because he thinks people are watching him!

But frankly, I don't really watch TV. I spend way more time on the computer, and I only really use the TV as an output device for my VCR and DVD player. Occasionally it's fun to watch the odd cartoon, but that's about it.

I don't trust the US media, I try and get my news mostly from the BBC and from the Google News page, if I'm looking for a particular subject.

98. Did any of you read their definition of 'Traditional Values' ?
"We believe in “discrimination” in the good sense:...." and "It is not “hate” to fight against such cultural forces as pornography, drugs, abortion, and sodomy."

I also like this: "Right To Life: We believe that every human deserves the right to life—from conception to death—and that we do not have the right to kill unborn children nor to murder the elderly through active euthanasia. We do, however, support the death penalty. The Bible is clear that the government has the responsibility to provide for peace and security for its people. We also believe the government has the power to take the lives of those who murder others and to wage war against our enemies."

I hope they don't mind if I 'pass' on their so-called 'values'!!

Yeah, I'm one of "those people" who like to listen to DVD commentaries!

On the Shrek 2 commentary, IIRC, they actually bring up this issue and state that Doris the bartender is one of Cinderella's ugly step sisters and is female, not a drag queen (or presumably, transgendered). They asked Larry King to do her voice because they thought it would be funny (which it is). They seemed amused by all of the speculation about her.

104. The folks at Traditional Values Coalition probably got so turned on...
...by watching the DVD that they had to run off to the bedroom before they could get to the commentary...that's what I think.

:toast: :spank:  :hurts: :boring:

could be seen as politically "subversive". :)

108. MY LETTER TO TRADITIONAL VALUES ORG
Oh my God! Have you not heard of Jeff Gannon? Your website completely ignores this true Family Values issue. Jeff Gannon is the cover name for a homosexual who has infiltrated the White House by posing as a phony Bureau Chief for a phony News outlet called Talon News, a small website that calls itself a news reporting site.

This is really scary. When homosexuals get this close to the seat of our government it's time to speak out. Worse, this Gannon guy, whose real name is James Guckert, saying he's a former Marine, is also a male prostitute. That's right. He sells his body for sexual pleasure to men! It has been discovered that he had several websites (he's taken them down but internet snoops have captured their pages to use as evidence) that dealt with selling homosexual favors for wealthy closeted gays. I can hardly type this.

Gannon had press credentials to allow him access to the White House and our President. Who the hell is watching the farm? How does someone of his ilk get past the investigators who hand out these passes? The only answer is, and I hate to say this because it goes way beyond that ugly, disgusting, Monica Lewinsky affair, someone in the White House has a crush on this Jeff Gannon or, worse, is having a homosexual sexual relationship with him and therefore allowing him access to the White House.

I say this is worse than the Clinton/Lewinsky thing because we're talking about man on man sex here. I know how you and your members feel about this issue so you MUST do something about this. You have the numbers, and the influence, to have Congress investigate this issue to find out just how this Jeff Gannon got so close to our President and why the vetting system (background checks) of candidates is so lax.

To add insult to this injury - Maureen Dowd (I know she's not a favorite of yours, but she's not a bad person) tells about trying to get press credentials for White House briefings and was told it takes many months for background checks to be completed. Now, Ms Dowd works for bonafide newspapers. This male hooker didn't. Yet he received credentials without having to wait. Something is very, very wrong and I'm hoping that just because he says he's a conservative Republican won't stop you from doing what is right. And that is, getting the Republican dominated Congress to investigate just what the hell is going on in our house, the White House.

Thank you

117. I know of fundie churches...
...where solists could not hold the microphone to their mouths in the usual fashion (head-on) because it had "phallic connotations". Funny, I never thought of that when watching vocalists or singing live...truly truly wierd. Anyway, singers had to hold the mics vertically. Alllllllrightythen....did some of these uppity ladies secretly engage in unmentionable acts with innocent SM-57's or SM-58's? The 58 has that ball end onnit, yanno..... :D

What a bunch of lunatics. Shrek 2 was the best movie of 2004, I bet they're just jealous that Passion of the Christ couldn't top it in the box office nor could it even top it in reviews.

115. To quote a user on a board where I posted this
"Someone should warn the TVC and the FRC that in Mel Gibson's film some of the hunky Roman soldiers were looking at the battered Jesus with some distinct S&M leers."

Ain't that the truth? :D

These "values" people have to be the sickest bunch of wackos on the face of the earth. GET YOUR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTERS!

Oh, and Shrek and Shrek 2 are both filled with double-entenders meant to make the movie appealing to adults while also entertaining children who don't get the jokes. If these people want to explain all the jokes to their, and my, kids, who's defiling who?

130. ARGH!
These people would be laughable if the media didn't take them so bloody seriously. No word of Gannongate, but this is IMPORTANT.

Just FYI, as a transsexual girl, if there's a "Transgendered Agenda" out there, I somehow missed it. What, do these people think we get together and plot ways to recruit children? WTF?
