Schwarzenegger risks angering women by targeting nurses, teachers

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/state/20050222-0006-ca-schwarzenegger-women.html

He has made headlines in recent months by deriding political opponents as "girlie men" and publicly ridiculing a group of nurses at a state women's conference.

His latest effort to paint the state's teachers as little more than a balky special interest group has angered many critics, who have begun to question why constituencies dominated by women have been singled out for such tough talk.

"He behaves like an arrogant patriarch with respect to women's occupations," said Rose Ann De Moro, executive director of the California Nurses Association. "Nurses, teachers, home health workers – it's vulgar how he's run roughshod over them. He's arrogant, and he's a bully."

<snip>

The CNA has been even more vocal, taking out full-page newspaper ads suggesting Schwarzenegger's corporate campaign donors are the real special interests and are the influence behind his agenda. Last week, some 300 nurses and their supporters disrupted a movie premiere in Sacramento, booing Schwarzenegger as he posed with film stars Vince Vaughn and The Rock.

11. Now there's a sensible question
Californians who voted for a serial sexual assaulter have no right to complain when he displays a predictably low regard for women. Maybe Californians should have thought about that when they still had the chance to do something about it in the ballot booth.

RNs Denounce Gov. for Harassment of Nurse Critics

Gov. Security: ‘Wearing nurses uniform threatening to governor’

The California Nurses Association today condemned Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for the personal use of the California Highway Patrol as a political police force to harass Registered Nurse critics just one week after the governor’s security detail detained an RN for wearing a hospital nurse uniform during a film premiere attended by the governor. CNA strongly criticized the targeting of RNs by Schwarzenegger for harassment by state police officers for RNs’ criticism of his record on healthcare and patient safety.

This morning after a report of the incident appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, Kelly DiGiacomo, RN, the Sacramento nurse, who was wrongfully detained at the film event February 15 at which Schwarzenegger spoke, was called by a state security officer. The officer said they were continuing to investigate “any incidents where we feel the governor may have been threatened.” The “threatening act,” according to the officer was “because I was wearing a nurses uniform,” DiGiacomo said.

Last week, DiGiacomo had a ticket to attend the Sacramento premiere of Be Cool: Get Shorty II. While seated in the audience, in her nurses’ uniform, DiGiacomo was approached by an undercover officer who demanded to see her ticket and pulled her out of the audience. DiGiacomo was then detained in a small back room where she was interrogated for an hour by an undercover officer while other officers guarded her. She was then held for another 30 minutes before her release.

But the harassment has continued, with the phone call today and the thinly veiled threat that the interrogation and harassment will continue. “How is it that someone can be considered a threat simply for wearing nurses’ scrubs? They really treated me like I was some sort of a serious threat or a terrorist,” says an outraged DiGiacomo. “I’m sure they will have a file on me now because they really profiled me.”

18. A longshoreman would blush......
If he heard or read what some of the nurses were saying about Arnuld. I know many here are non nurses so let me clue you in.....Nurses are patient advocates...we work for you to keep you safe and to make sure you are cared for in a manner conducive to restoring health. Hospitals have a profit motive and want more for less. They frequently give nurses too many patients to safely and effectively care for. We want to do it safe, they want to do it cheap. We protest and vote with our feet, they donate obscene amounts of money to campaigns. We had made real progress in Ca. by mandating nurse to patient ratios, and Arnuld wants to undo that. It takes a lot for nurses to strike and even more for them to unionize...but health care in America has come down to that. So next time you hear bad press about a Nurses Strike, remember what I am telling you....we are patient advocates first and foremost. And Arnuld, if you ever get sick in Ca (and you will eventually from all that steroid use), I am not saying you won't get good care 'cause unlike some WE are professionals, BUT I will be taking care of the other 10-12 patient I have before I can get to you. Too bad, we use to have to care for only 5-6 on our 12 hr (+ mandatory over time) shift.

Edited on Tue Feb-22-05 06:24 PM by rainbow4321
For the non-nurses: That is a fancy shmancy way for a hospital to say "we are wonderful, we can get all the nurses we need and our nurses never leave"...LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL...<catching breath>...back to reality...
The only thing hospitals care about is "a pulse and a license" and how cheap can they be in paying for said pulse/license. Our facility put out a glossy brochure "things we have accomplished in 2004 and want to accomplish in 2005". Getting the hospital's nurse vacancy rate below 7% is one of their goals...lots of luck with that seeing as how with my floor's night shift staff alone our vacancy rate is around 50%---it so sucks to look at the schedule and to be ONE of the TWO nurses scheduled when you know the night will call for 8 or 9 nurses. But, by gosh, didn't that same brochure have a full page of new equipment and upgrades purchased by the hospital in the last year.

I hope the CA nurses <and teachers> show up at ALL of his damn public appearances... and maybe throw an enema bag or two at him.

You see how little it matters whether nurses can cover the patients or not? He'll never be one of the neglected.

Just like our congressional leaders will never retire on Social Security or use the same health insurance we do.

It makes a huge difference when the people representing us have nothing in common with us. They don't suffer from the deprivations they impose on us.

36. Schwarzenegger Remarks On Women Anger Many
AP - Beth Fouhy

Could Gov Arnold Schwarzenegger have another "woman problem" on his hands? Schwarzenegger made headlines in recent months deriding political opponents as "girlie men" and ridiculing a group of nurses at a woman's conference. Now, an effort to paint the state's teachers as little more than a balky special interest group has angered many critics, who have begun to question why constituencies dominated by women have been subjected to such tough talk.

"He behaves like an arrogant patriarch with respect to women's occupations, said Rose Ann De Moro, executive director of the California Nurses Association. "Nurses, teachers, home health workers - its vulgar how he's run roughshod over them. He's arrogant, and he's a bully."

(later)

In December a small group of nurses gathered at a state women's conference to protest Shwarzenegger's decision to side with hospitals and delay changes to the state's nurse-to-patient ratio. With Shriver in the audience, Schwarzenegger responded to the protesters by saying, "The special interests don't like me in Sacramento because I am always kicking their butts."

The nurses union denounced his comment, and the attacks on the governor have only escalated since.

"The arrogance of taking on teachers, nurses, and other professions where women are underpaid, overworked and vital to society is beyond the pale," said Jamie Court, president of the Foundation for Taxpayers and Consumer Rights. "But Arnold is someone who treats women as objects, so its natural for him to have a tendency to disregard and devalue professions that are made up of women."

My recollection is that California went tidily for Kerry, so plainly shrub fans are a minority, yet, somehow, an admitted serial sexual assaulter sits in the governor's mansion. Sorry, I have no doubt that you personally did not vote for him, but I think California nonetheless has a lot of egg on its face for a bona fide majority of its population having legitimately voted into power a man with no experience apart from beating up and raping women. You guys knew, it was no secret, yet a great many of your fellow Californians looked the other way. I still can't go over what a terrifying message that sent to women nationwide. Why bother reporting a rape if it's only going to get the rapist elected to high-level public office?

50. Teachers and nurses? Hmm. I'm dropping Ahnie's point spread to 10
Was at 15, but pissing off the teachers and nurses is not going to sit well with voters. Even Ahnold's core of latent misogynists are going to have second thoughts when it comes to the nurses.

This Tony Quinn guy got it dead on in the article:
---
Political analyst Tony Quinn said the danger for Schwarzenegger lies in the widespread public fondness for teachers and nurses.

"Their strength lies in the fact that people genuinely like their teachers and like nurses, even if they don't necessarily like their union," Quinn said.
---

Not yet enough to tip the balance in itself, but now Herr Gropenator has to work a little bit for it. If he keeps fucking up like this, he could face a real challenge.

54. He wanted to eliminate the state's Board of Nursing
Ok...looks like the CA nurses beat his ass before..maybe they can organize and do it again. The idiot wanted to make California the ONLY state WITHOUT an independent Board of Nursing..merging it with a Consumer Affairs board, something his own "expert panel" did NOT suggest. Per the 2nd article, he had to back down.

http://www.nurseweek.com/news/Features/05-01/BoardOfNursing.asp

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has proposed shifting power away from the California Board of Nursing to the Department of Consumer Affairs, thereby effectively ending its autonomy. Nursing organizations around the state have vowed to fight this plan.

The nine-member independent board interprets and enforces laws related to nursing education, licensure, practice, and discipline. Under Schwarzenegger’s proposal, the state Department of Consumer Affairs would take over decision-making for the board and oversee its staff.

The board is one of 88 independent boards and commissions the governor said in his State of the State speech Jan. 5 that he wants to reorganize. These include licensing organizations that set rules for at least 16 health care fields, as well as for architects, contractors, cosmetologists, and other professions. The BRN and other health care licensing boards were not recommended for elimination by the governor’s expert panel, the California Performance Review.

Nursing organizations, including those representing union members and nurse executives, say they will work together to keep the board independent, which they say protects nurses’ rights and helps keep patients safe. If the governor’s proposal is approved by the Legislature, California will be the only state without a Board of Registered Nursing.

http://www.nursingworld.org/pressrel/2005/pr0218.htm

Gov. Schwarzenegger Pulls Back Proposal to
Eliminate Board of Registered Nursing

The American Nurses Association (ANA) called California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's decision to pull back his proposal to eliminate the Board of Registered Nursing a victory for nurses and patients. The governor withdrew his controversial proposal yesterday.

In January 2005, Gov. Schwarzenegger submitted a reform proposal to the Little Hoover Commission that recommended the elimination of 88 independent regulatory boards and commissions, including the Board of Registered Nursing. Both ANA and its California constituent, ANA/California, submitted expert testimony to the Little Hoover Commission, outlining their strong opposition to the proposal. The Little Hoover Commission is an independent state agency that reviews the operations of state government.

"We are pleased the governor heard our concerns," said ANA President Barbara A. Blakeney, MS, RN. "The Board of Registered Nursing plays a vital role in regulating the practice of nursing and, therefore, protecting patients. We will continue to advocate for the board of nursing's independence and for the critical role it plays in protecting patients."

63. Wasn't there some really ignorant comment......
about lumping them with automotive technicians or some such nonsense.
For the non nurses, a board of Nurses (BON), checks the credentials of nurses applying for license in a state and also monitor a nursing practice for patient safety (there's that patient advocacy thing again). Unlike doctor's who it seems seldom get their license revoked for poor practice standards, nurse's can get theirs yanked in a New York minute because of questionable practice by a BON. As a result of this high standard, many nurses will leave a setting where the are forced or coerced into an unsafe practice-thus the bases for our current shortage. BON are essential as a self monitoring and public safety tool.
BON do not have the capacity to fine hospitals for bad nursing care standards and JACHO is a joke-hospitals pay for that inspection and do you really thing JACHO would bite the hand that feeds it.
Remember, nurses are like an air traffic controller, without them, health care will crash and burn.
And Aunold...well maybe those hyper-male trapping belie someone that is insecure about his sexuality and relationship with women. If you can't deal with the situation, try to control it. What a knuckle dragging, mouth breathing moran.

62. State Treasurer Phil Angelides
seems to be the most vocal..Angelides is planning on running ads soon opposing much of arni's programs..Angelides..Articulate and vocal. If only Democrats in the legislaure begin to go into attack mode arni's easy ride is over...Legislative Democrats have been kissing arni's azz...enough of that ..
