Bush Urges Haste on Social Security Reform

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Back from stroking U.S. allies in Europe, President Bush now is lobbying a home-front target: wary lawmakers returning from a long congressional break, where they heard their constituents' concerns about Social Security overhaul. The lawmakers got an earful from voters back home. Now, Bush wants them to listen to him....

``Every year we wait to address this problem will make any eventual solution more painful and drastic, and we will saddle our children and grandchildren with an ever-greater burden,'' he said Saturday. ``We need to act now to fix Social Security permanently.''

I think we can wait a few more years when we have someone with competence to come up with a plan that will actually benefit the working middle class and not the Corporations and market investors you're whoring for.

26. He needs to rush even harder now
because his lieutenant, Delay, is under serious fire, and without him to bully Congress into toeing the line, he's got absolutely no hope of this money grab passing.

Delay, you will recall, holds GOP party purse strings, and any congresscritter who wants party support come election time needs to hear and obey.

If we manage to get rid of Delay, the whole edifice will start to crumble.

Plus, it will be wonderful to see how that fat, cigar chomping thug looks in orange.

29. Borrow 2 trillion to fund a changeover bureaucracy
so that people can invest 2% of their insurance premiums in a stock market funded annuity pledged to pay 6% per year but charge at least 15% in "service fees." The annuity is not transferable, so if the person who pays in croaks before he gets a dime, the gummint takes it all. His survivors are left with nothing.

It's a scam. It further defunds a program they're howling is running out of money.

9. Didn't care about saddling the children when he cut taxes during a
war and already huge deficit. I am beginning to really believe the collapse of the dollar is going to happen. Then many of the children won't even have a home to live in. If he wants to protect the children then he will stop making war, not cut taxes on the richest, expand the social security tax. He's a pathological liar and incredibly stupid.

Bush LOVES increasing the debt on the next generation. In 2000 he ran on preserving the Clinton surplus to strengthen SS. It was his top priority. Yet EVERYTHING he's done these past 4 years has been designed to increase the debt.

I'm sure they are saying behind the scenes that he can't afford to lose this or else he'll look weak.

The neocons don't give a shit about anything but pushing their agenda down all our throats.

I hope we get enough left wing media in place to counter his lies.

By the way. I haven't heard the freepers wade in on this. Do they trust their future payments in Bush's hands knowing quite well that the wing nut agenda is to do away with all entitlement programs. What's the freeper perspective on this?

Bush has said that private accounts will not fix social security and he hasn't offered a plan in detail to fix it. Do they trust him with out any facts?

I heard a repuke congress critter say on NPR that the Dems have to come up with a plan. Well they have one. It got us to a surplus in 2000 and we can do it again.

18. Like he cares about our grand children's burden
what the hell is the trillions of dollars in debt if not a major burden for future generations? That premise assumes we have any future generations by the time he stops playing the Apocalypse game in the Middle East

Does he not listen, every indicator I have seen is the American people do not want his harebrained scheme. Only the die hard republican right seems to support this, and even many of them seem not that thrilled.

So much for government of the people, by the people and for the people, except when Bush is in the Oval.

32. My two cents on this issue, and fuck 'em all who want privatization:
Why the haste on something that'll remain solvent until 2042? Purportedly 2042 anyway...

We need reforms in the US. But they need to be in the best interests of ALL. Not just the short-term market needs of the wealthy and business owners, who typically are ignorant (unwittingly, unknowingly, or deliberately) to the struggles everyone else faces.

The stock market recently dropped 150 points because South Korea figured it out that the US dollar is shit when in control by neocon thugs who cut'n'spend-wastefully instead of tax'n'spend-wisely.

I don't want the money I put into SS to be moved to the stock market, which helps mainly the execs who own all the stocks, who in turn sell when the price is right - leaving me with nothing. That's the system that we've seen over the last few years. and those selling are the ilk of Ken Lay and other evil criminals.

Yes, evil. Evil is more than ramming a plane into a building. At least those 3000 died quickly. Old people with no money die slowly and in more pain. So what Ken Lay, et al, did is even MORE evil than OBL and 19 terrorists, 15 of which were Saudi and not Afghani. x(

That was the chant of Rick Santorum's college Repubs at an anti-SS rally.

These ignorant college Repubs unwittingly were telling everyone that Bush is a LIAR!

Sen. Boxer said a few weeks ago that Bush intended to destroy SS.

House minority leader, Nancy Pelosi, said a few days ago that Bush's plan is a "rip-off."

Just like Saddam, the tyrant Bush steals from his own countrymen and women.

Tyrant Bush also plans to kill Medicare and Medicaid, and then impose a flat tax, which will devastate ordinary Americans, and give still more tax cuts to the rich.

aren't buying this. College daughter calls it Gambling ("How the hell am I going to know if the stock market will tank in 45 YEARS?")and working 26 year old daughter (who HAS 401K) calls it making Wall Street Brokers RICHER.

On the subject of those College Republicans, my younger daughter has had many run ins with them ranging from phone calls, to nasty emails, to being censored on the campus radio station for making "anti Bush" statements on air. She called Bush an idiot on air. Free speech? Campus officials told her that even though there weren't very many complaints, they "didn't want to make waves." This, by the way, was at a State University in one of the Bluest of Blue States.

49. Bush Urges Haste on Social Security Reform - - Oh...OK...LOL!!!
WASHINGTON - Back from stroking U.S. allies in Europe, President Bush (news - web sites) now is lobbying a home-front target: wary lawmakers returning from a long congressional break, where they heard their constituents' concerns about Social Security (news - web sites) overhaul. The lawmakers got an earful from voters back home. Now, Bush wants them to listen to him.

"We need to act now to fix Social Security permanently," he said Saturday in a radio address aimed at Congress.

The president is making a fresh push for his plan to let younger workers put part of their Social Security payroll taxes in private investment accounts. He has taken that campaign to eight states and is continuing it next Friday in New Jersey and Indiana.

Bush is making the trips in hopes of persuading voters to pressure Congress to tackle the future solvency problems of the politically sensitive Social Security system. His message is twofold: reassure those born before 1950 that their Social Security benefits will not change in any way and tell younger workers that "Social Security is heading toward bankruptcy."
